Forums - Sales Discussion - Famitsu sales: Week 49, 2021 - (29th Nov - 5th Dec)

How can anyone look at this and have any confidence in the PS brand in Japan. How are developers going to cope as the PS4 goes away next year and the PS5, which is a dud, is their only option?

This would only be a problem for developers who only sell games in Japan. Didn't we hear about Capcom wanting to push the Monster Hunter Series more in the west when they were developing Monster Hunter World? Result? Their best selling game ever. Aiming for highest global sales is what every hardware and software manufacturer should do.

Regardless I think it's a bit premature to call the PS5 a dud in Japan. It was ahead of PS4 launch aligned until a couple of weeks ago. Clearly stock is being prioritised elsewhere. I'll wait a bit longer before calling it a dud. What will decide if it's a dud is demand, and what is shown here in sales is supply.

Japanese developers have nothing to worry about.

Switch is pretty much the only serious platform in the region at this point, ACNH is also nearing that 7m retail.

From Hisku-Kun

NSW 2021 is 174K behind NSW 2020 with 3 weeks left of the year, if the remaining 3 weeks are flat then 2021 will total 5.79m versus 5.96m in 2020.

This will surely be the first time that NSW sales have declined  year over year in Japan although they would have increased if not for stock shortages.

Famitsu Yearly NSW totals

2017: 3,407,158

2018: 3,482,388

2019: 4,493,885

2020: 5,956,943

Were there not stock issues this time last year, as well? If there were, then that argument about 2021 would have beat 2020 may not be accurate. Covid started late 2019 in Asia and was in full force globally by like March/April 2020, so production everyone was decreasing rapidly around then. Without Covid, there would have been a lot more Switch's manufactured in 2020 and 2021, so we can't assume 2021 would be better if not for shortages since the same logic could be applied to 2020.

You're missing the point, when 2021 started we already knew about stock issues in 2020. People wouldn't have bet that 2021 would beat 2020 if 2020 had better stock and sold 7 million.

2021 needed a clear win this week, but that didn't happen. So now it requires three 300k+ weeks just to have a chance at topping 2020, but that's completely unrealistic. What is still realistic is a final figure of 5.8m+ for the year.

The recent press releases for the European market confirm that Europe has received bigger Switch shipments this year than last year, so it's Japan that suffers a bit when global shipments remain roughly flat during the comparable period. It's not much, but it's enough to decide Japan's 2020 vs. 2021 battle early. So...

...in the bigger picture, ending a year on a supply-constrained note is a positive for the year that follows, because sales get shifted to a later date. While a decline in hardware sales is expected for 2022 due to Switch's age and Japan being the country closest to its saturation point, we could see another 5m+ year for Switch regardless.

Europe is up in November? well hopefully this continues in December and in North America as well. This is good news and gives me hope that NSW can beat the NDS' 11.89m record Q3, i think there is a chance. NSW already took one of NDS' records when it shipped 6.86m in Q2 last year beating out 6.79m by NDS, could it snatch another? This is positive news and would be a good recovery after the "below par" Q2 hardware sales and would make that 24m fiscal year forecast extremely likely.

Total Nintendomination. Japan is practically a single system market at this point.

At this rate PS5 will soon be trending behind PS4.

Damn! Switch was 98.5% of all console sales last week in Japan. Great restock for Switch (still below 2020 though) and terrible stock for all the others.

Which means I get to put out this image again because a mere Pac-Man isn't good enough. This is the mass of the sun compared to everything else in the Solar System, kind of the distribution of the Switch against the rest in the hardware space.

LOL, before I read the labels, I actually thought this was a chart of hardware sales for this week.
