23: Mega Man 2
19: At first I though this was Mega Man X, but after seeing the hints for #4 I'm not entirely sure. Did X2 have something like Hadouken as well?
4: Mega Man X

I feel like this could be Super Mario Bros 3 (curtains opening, action on stage at the start up screen), but sure there's earlier examples of NG+

#11
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (PC)
YoY: -4
This is the game that introduced me to the Trails series, and considering it is now behind only Final Fantasy and Dark Souls among my favourite video game series, I'm very happy that I ended up stumbling across Trails in the Sky on Steam five years ago. There's very little about this game that I don't love. The few minor shortcomings that there are can generally be attributed to the game's age, and everything else about it is genuinely excellent.
The way this game also sets up events that are still unfolding nine games later is quite amazing. While in this first game those things are largely just hinted at, it is the title that began unveiling a world that has expanded to include dozens of characters, multiple nations, hundreds of years of history, and much more. What initially seemed like a relatively straightforward journey of two characters growing up and achieving their dreams has grown to become one of the best-written and most expansive fantasy worlds across any medium.

When most people think about 2D Platformers they often think about 'Super Mario Bros.' and 'Super Mario Bros. 3' (#13), 'Super Mario World', 'Donkey Kong Country' or one of the modern indie titles. Those are all great and all, but the genre found its peak in 1995 with a little game called 'Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island'. A sequel in name only, and more often remembered as just 'Yoshi's Island', this is very much its own game and is totally different than its namesake. Different in all the right ways though because every aspect of it seems to have been improved. Most of all, the game is absolutely beautiful.
The art direction here, the hand-drawn crayon look, is gorgeous. At first, the game was supposed to look like how Donkey Kong Country looks; sprites made from 3D models. The game's intro is still evidence to that fact. However at some point the designers decided to do it differently instead. This is so successfully unique, that I'd argue this is still one of, if not the, prettiest game ever made. All the polygons in the world with textures that are too realistic like in a lot of modern games is boring and forgettable. Things like this though most definitely aren't and it shows that good artists can make a game.
Nay? Second hint then;
#1: This game was initially supposed to only take place in one building.
Hint 2: This building is a castle, a castle that at least by name is still in the game, at the very end.
