Total Annihilation (PC)

This is one of the games that made me a huge RTS fan back in the late 90s. Alongside series like Command & Conquer, Warcraft, Starcraft and Age of Empires, Total Annihilation was one of the landmark titles that shaped the genre around the turn of the millennium. Even if certain aspects of the game haven't aged very gracefully (the AI), I can still easily go back and spend an evening building massive war machines and destroying robots without ever getting bored. In fact, I literally just now installed it once again after a long break.

Obviously, nostalgia plays a part in its high ranking on my list, but that's the way it works sometimes. I expect that over time Total Annihilation will slowly fall further down on the list as I play new games, but I will probably never really stop playing it either.

I should have figured this one out much earlier. 29 is Nier: Automata, and I think 27 is Tales of the Abyss.

Well the long stays got cleaned up pretty well so we're back to 1 or 2 hints per game.

24) After gathering tons of stars twice before, you now go looking for them at the source.

Hint 2: Don't take "source" too literally.

23) The titular character that just can't stay dead is back for the 3rd time.

Hint 2: The titular character is the villain.

21) On my "CD shelve" this game takes up nearly an entire row.

#21 - Normally you can be robbed if you walk into a shady neighborhood, but in this game it's in the dark world.
Hint 2 - The only game in its series to have limited ammunition for some of your basic weapons.

There were a lot of awesome things coming out during what I like to call the Golden Age of Video Games. On Nintendo 64, which came to be my favourite console ever, on PlayStation, on SEGA Dreamcast when it released during the tail end of this age, and also on PC during these years it was classic after classic after classic. So obviously, my anticipation for 'The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask' was at an all-time high. During this time, Nintendo actually advertised their core games on tv, instead of the casual ones like they do today, so my head was spinning. No joke, I don't know how it is elsewhere, but just minutes ago I saw the umpteenth commercial for 'Big Brain Academy', while there hasn't ever been a single one for say 'Metroid Dread'.

My aunt and uncle had a friend that worked at Nintendo. Also that's not a joke, they actually did have a friend that worked at Nintendo, at tech support or something. Anyway, he was able to get my cousin (probably stole it) an early copy of Majora's Mask, some time before the official release so that was exciting. I came over to play but there was something weird. Usually in Zelda games getting a heart is good thing, it's health, but now, getting a heart killed you. Instantly. Also, the intro cutscene showed Link losing the Ocarina of Time, but when we opened the inventory screen it was still there. Even stranger, every slot was an Ocarina of Time! We were quite dumbfounded. So I got my own legit copy from the store when it released, and everything was how it was supposed to be. Hearts were health and the inventory was empty. That family friend gifted my cousin a faulty copy. I learned then that it was a better idea to just wait, and get things the normal way. A wise lesson.

Hint 2: Is what the barkeep said about the abundance of garbage this planet creates. He knows the real reason why you asked though, so time to show your weapon.

#18: This game features a building named "Kong Tower", which is fitting because it kind of looks like the real 'Kong' tower.
