Forums - Nintendo - Digital Foundry: Dying Light on Nintendo Switch Tech Review - Another Miracle Mobile Port?

Games are getting more and more complex and expensive to make, tell me how let's say Techland could make entirely new exclusive game to Switch if they are already taking 7 years to make Dying Light 2?

Same with CDPR, Rockstar and so many other developers. Making new exclusive games takes too long, costs a lot and you need a lot of developers to make it.

They would much rather outsource porting of their older work to Switch for the fraction of cost.

But because Nintendo has good connections and huge user base in Japan you still get games like Shin Megami Tensei V and Monster Hunter Rise.

I understand this, and that's why I don't praise barren ports. Overall third parties still showing very few commitment with Switch despite of its userbase. It's not like I'm asking for a new GTA or a new The Witcher to come to Switch, just new games designed to run in a weak hardware that are actually less costly to make and can be done faster. Switch userbase will potentially be over 150 million with all said and done, it's about 90% of PS4+Xbone sales more than enough to justify development for Switch, they don't do it because for several reasons, but whatever is their justification lack of potential sales is not included

And it's not like Switch games need to be exclusive. Games made for Switch can be easily ported to PC, Xbox and PS4/PS5 with better graphics. I'm sure they will get way less attention they they would if they were high-end AAA games designed to PS4 and Series X, but I doubt a game like Monster Hunter Rise wouldn't sell at least some more 2-3 million outside Switch

I very much agree that third parties should make more games for Switch, but I don't see why this should rule out PS4/Xbone ports, since most of the time these are handled by porting studios like Panic Button, Saber, and QLOC, rather than the original developers.

You have a point, if all those ports are outsourced by porting studios then there is even less excuses for not making more games

I spent ages platinuming this game on PS4 and this game is huge, surprised they got it to look somewhat comparable on Switch especially with all those zombies on screen.

2015 game running on 2017 hardware and we are calling it a miracle port...

Mobile hardware though.

True; like I say, I'm on the same page as far as thinking third parties should be making more games for Switch given its gargantuan popularity and proven ability to move software.

I just also think there's a place for ports like this to expand its library with games that Nintendo systems would traditionally miss out on. As a Switch owner I really appreciate that I've been able to play several PS4/Xbone ports on my platform of choice without having to drop hundreds of dollars on a new console.

I'm okay with a game looking a bit soft or having blurry textures so long as the core experience is still fun.

Can anyone tell me what is the current size for GTA Trilogy Remasters on the eShop? (after pre-ordering)

I think you might have the wrong thread. ;)

Regardless, here in Australia it's 19.5GB.

I checked out the game's credits and it was Virtuos who handled the port.

This took me by surprise; their track record on Switch has been uneven, and while they've done some decent ports like Starlink and the Bioshock trilogy, nothing they've done prior has been anywhere near this impressive.

Techland co-developed the port with Virtuos though, this video confirms it.

02:05 "Well, we have talked with many leading companies, and in the end we have decided to co-develop the game with the company that have a proven track record with Nintendo Switch ports."

Yeah, I watched that one, it's what got me looking into which studio it was that did the heavy lifting as they strangely didn't mention them by name. I didn't expect it to be Virtuos based on how demanding the game is yet how strong the port is, the last time they tried their hand at a demanding 8th gen port was Outer Worlds, where the results left a lot to be desired.
