Forums - Gaming - Steam Deck Does What Nintendon't?

I don't either, but i have to say it based on what happened so far.

Bold: maybe the name of the article made him decided to come here, and i did the same.

That's why I mentioned about the previous thread, which also included this one. It's hard to play devil's advocate when you only know half the story.

Even when he knew, he still came in with a half arsed argument (There are literally thousands upon thousands of games without physical releases and physical releases from the 90's that aren't even in print or in large supply anymore, and this is just common knowledge, which I expected him to know, before making that kind of comment).

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

And Nintendo does what Steam doesn't. I'm all for new hardware coming out, but the Deck seems like a huge waste of time and money. It feels like Valve saw the success of the Switch and decided to make something to try and get the same sales but has none of the charm or software.

Software library certainly isn't a problem for the Steam Deck.

Software isn't a problem for the Deck, but it also isn't a problem for the Switch either.  The Switch has Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, Pikmin, Smash, Kart, etc.  As long as Nintendo produces quality software Nintendo isn't going anywhere.

Take a look at your argument, PC can play most of what the ps5 can play....  yet ps5 continues to sell because it has Ratchet, Returnal and Demon.  And it will be getting Horizon, God of War, etc.  Exclusives matter.  Nintendo has them, so they aren't going anywhere.

Hardware is nothing without Nintendo games. Same reason ps5 sells despite much stronger computers.

So PS5 sells good because it has Nintendo games?

Obviously I meant switch is nothing without Nintendo exclusives just like the ps5 is nothing without Sony exclusives.  Exclusives move hardware, it isn't a hard concept to follow.

By that logic PC gaming shouldn't be a thing. No PC in this world has exclusive games. And the Steam Deck is just that, another PC.

Seriously, people need to stop comparing the thing to a traditional console. Because it couldn't be farther away from that.

You are making the conversation more than what it is.  Sure, some don't care about nintendo and Sony games, thus they may go PC.  I'm saying Nintendo (and Sony) have a core base who love their exclusive software.  Those folks are unlikely to ditch Nintendo (or sony) for the Deck.

Meaning I agree, the comparison is silly.  People didn't buy a switch for the hardware, they bought it for the software.

Also for the convenience, the "it just works" factor. Most people just want to play games and be assured those games all run acceptably well.

You can already play FS2020 on a handheld, but it's a lot more effort than simply playing it on XBox One S

Now, why didn't we have a thread GDP Win 3 does what Nintendon't? Valve sets an aggressive price point (for a rather gimped version) and the world goes crazy! Well, just the ones that really want to play Nintendo games but feel too 'mature' to buy a Switch to do so.

Or maybe games are only fun with an fps counter on screen? :p

Steam will make the breakthrough handheld! (it will remain a novelty)

Good + great games also move hardware. And the Steam Deck will have lots of them, even without going down the emulation rabbit hole. Exclusivity doesn't make a game better or worse.

Switch already has an awesome library with over 100 great games with a MetaScore of 85+ and over 300 good games with a MetaScore of 80+... that's much better than any handheld before.

Well, the PC library has over 500 great "85+" games and over 1200 good "80+" games. Not all of them will work on SteamOS but many of them will... proton compatibility is of course focused on the good games, not the bad games.

We can probably play all these games on Steam Deck:

  • all Portal games
  • all Half-Life games (except Alyx)
  • all GTA games
  • all Mass Effect games
  • all Elder Scrolls games
  • all Fallout games
  • all Witcher games
  • all Final Fantasy games
  • all Doom games
  • all Quake games
  • all Wolfenstein games
  • all BioShock games
  • all Borderlands games
  • most Assassin's Creed games
  • all Dishonored games
  • all Batman Arkham games
  • all Deus Ex games
  • all Civilization games
  • all Remedy games
  • all Resident Evil games
  • Disco Elysium
  • Metal Gear Solid V
  • many many more

"So I think Nintendo does a great job targeting the audience they do with the content that they have. And that's going to be different. Like when you pick this up, it feels much more like the ergonomics for somebody who's used to playing with an expensive game controller, right? Because it's bigger and it's bulkier than a Switch. And if we're right, that's the right trade-off to be making for the audience that we're going after," Newell said.

Bigger and bulkier with ergonomics?

Sounds like they got inspired by the WiiU Gamepad instead.

EDIT: Posting here on mobile sucks big time!

Good old WiiU gamepad. I liked that thing, wish Nintendo would make it backwards compatible with the Switch.

Obviously, I am not suggesting as much.  Again I think you are making the discussion more than what it is.

Let us say I am a huge Zelda fan.  I love Zelda, I want to play Zelda, especially the new releases.....  what hardware options do I have?  Oh yeah, the Switch.  Same goes for From Software fans with Demon and Bloodborne.

So I am not suggesting third party games are bad, nor am I saying people don't buy hardware to play them.  I'm simply saying if somebody wants an exclusive really bad, it is great motivation to purchase the associated hardware.

Nothing more, nothing less.  I am not sure what is so confusing, if I am honest.
