Forums - Sales Discussion - VGChartz Sales Comparison Charts June 2021 Discussion Thread

So Switch should overtake 3DS + Wii U combined in the July charts thread next month, and is just 1 million off it as of our charts for the 10th of this month, nearly three weeks ago in realtime. It's been a fun ride and it will be very satisfying to see it conclude.

Otherwise, great to be able to compare these two giants.

Switch vs PS4 in the US Sales Comparison - June 2021

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4.

The PS4 launched in the US on November 15, 2013, while the Switch launched on March 3, 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. PS4 US:

Gap change over last 12 months: 4,194,558 - Switch

PS4 Total Sales: 23,518,506

June 2021 is the 52nd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap in the US between the Switch and PlayStation 4 grew in favor of the Switch when you align launches. The Switch sold 198,958 more units than the PS4 in the last month. In the last 12 months, the Switch has grown its lead by 4.19 million units. The Switch currently leads by 6.39 million units.

The 52nd month on sale for the Switch is June 2021, while for the PS4 it is February 2018. The Switch has sold 29.91 million units, while the PS4 sold 23.52 million units during the same timeframe.

The PS4 did not reach the current Switch sales until month 71 where it sold a total of 30.10 million units.

The PS4 has been available for 92 months in the US and has sold 34.86 million units. The Switch is currently 4.95 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4.

The end is in sight for this battle; PS4 won't sell much more in the US from here on out, while at the speed Switch is moving, 4.95 million isn't much of a buffer. We might even see the Switch overtake by the end of the year.

The 92nd month for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is June 2021, while for the Xbox 360 it is June 2013 and for the PlayStation 3 it is June 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for all four consoles are lined up.

Gap change over last 12 months: 9,984,318 - PS3 & X360

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sold a combined 173.22 million units lifetime. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are currently 7.24 million units away from surpassing the PS3 and X360.

Crazy to think PS4 + Xbone are 4.5 million ahead yet are proving to have such worse legs. Gamers seem much keener to upgrade from the 8th gen to the 9th than the were to move on from the 7th to the 8th.

Slowly but surely Switch is closing in on its predecessor. It's only a matter of time now, which is no small feat as 3DS is Japan's #3 best selling system ever.

Wii's total in the US is truly formidable, but Switch is about three quarters of the way there after four and a bit years, so assuming it doesn't get replaced next year it should have this in the bag. (Heck even then it might have a chance)

PS4 vs DS in Europe Sales Comparison - June 2021

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in March 2005 in Europe, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, that is why you see spikes and dips. The DS is the best-selling platform in Europe in the last two video game generations, while the PlayStation 4 comes in second place.

PlayStation 4 Vs. DS Europe:

Gap change in latest month: 55,907 – PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,170,883 – PS4

Total Lead: 2,991,151 - DS

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 48,435,053

DS Total Sales: 51,426,204

June 2021 is the 92nd month that the PlayStation 4 has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the PlayStation 4 has closed the gap when compared with the DS during the same timeframe by 55,907 units. The PlayStation 4 has outsold the DS by 1.17 million units in the last 12 months. The Nintendo DS currently leads by 2.99 million units.

The 92nd month on sale for the PlayStation 4 in Europe is June 2021, while for the Nintendo DS it is October 2012. The PlayStation 4 has sold 48.44 million units, while the Nintendo DS sold 51.43 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current PlayStation 4 sales in month 73.

The Nintendo DS ended up selling 51.84 million units lifetime in Europe. The PlayStation 4 is currently 3.40 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS.

At the current rate of closure, 3.4 million seems a bridge too far. PS4 will probably get close, but ultimately fall just a little short.

If this is any indication, in the past Sony have discontinued their systems when their last year has been between 200 and 500k units for the year (not that they were waiting exactly for these numbers but just saying), therefore PS4 should live at least until end of next year.

Yeah if I had to guess I'd say PS4 will probably be discontinued in 2023.

It finally happened.
