Forums - Gaming Discussion - Your 5 favorite games from the last 5 years

I can't make a top 5 per year, there are many years where I truthfully only liked two or three games, and other times I didn't even play more than three.

So I'd rather make an overall list, which goes like:

1. DOOM Eternal
2. DOOM 2016
3. Ys VIII
4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
5. Zelda: Breath of the Wild

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

2017:
1. Horizon Zero Dawn
2. Nier: Automata
3. Hollow Knight
4. Yakuza 0
5. Tales of Berseria
(This is a difficult year to rank. I'm already leaving out games like Trails in the Sky the 3rd, Gravity Rush 2, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Breath of the Wild, all of which I love.)

I know what you mean about 2017! I'd have actually preferred to list more games for each year actually, but I felt like requesting more than five per year might be too unreasonable or overwhelming a task for many if not most, so I opted for a consistent rule of five per year.

Had I NOT gone with a consistent rule for the sake of there being any structure here, my list of favorite games from each year would've instead looked like this:

2016:

1) Diaries of Spaceport Janitor
2) Ittle Dew 2
3) That Dragon, Cancer
4) Pony Island
5) The Last Guardian
6) Inside
7) Stardew Valley
8) The Flame in the Flood
9) Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
10) VA11-Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action
11) Dishonored 2
12) One Night Stand
13) 1979 Revolution: Black Friday
14) Oxenfree
15) Hyper Light Drifter
16) Overwatch
17) A Little Lily Princess
18) Virginia

2017:

1) Butterfly Soup
2) What Remains of Edith Finch
3) Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
4) Night in the Woods
5) Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
6) Nier: Automata
7) Dream Daddy
8) The Shrouded Isle
9) Tales of Berseria
10) Cosmic Star Heroine
11) Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
12) Little Nightmares
13) Sonic Mania
14) Star Fox 2
15) Hollow Knight
16) Persona 5
17) Metroid: Samus Returns
18) A Hat in Time
19) Pyre
20) Horizon Zero Dawn
21) Super Mario Odyssey
22) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
23) Life is Strange: Before the Storm

2018:

1) Celeste
2) Donut County
3) Return of the Obra Dinn
4) Alwa's Awakening
5) God of War
6) Florence
7) Shadow of the Tomb Raider

2019:

1) Knights and Bikes
2) Death Stranding
3) A Plague Tale: Innocence
4) Gato Roboto
5) Untitled Goose Game
6) A Short Hike
7) Cadence of Hyrule
8) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
9) Control
10) Mutazione
11) Deadeus

2020:

1) The Last of Us Part II
2) Spiritfarer
3) Hades
4) Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
5) ScourgeBringer
6) Streets of Rage 4
7) There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension
8) Mission: It's Complicated
9) Demon's Souls
10) Animal Crossing: New Horizons
11) Ghost of Tsushima
12) Astro's Playroom
13) Ori and the Will of the Wisps

2021:

1) It Takes Two
2) Returnal
----------------------------
3) Oddworld: Soulstorm
4) The Medium

Honorable Mention: Kentucky Route Zero

That's not all my games from any of those years, it's just a list of the ones I replay or intend to. Crash 4 is excluded from this version of the 2021 list because I haven't replayed it and don't really plan to in the foreseeable future. Anyway, as you can see, this version of the list is a little unwieldy and thought it might get that way for other people too, so that's why I went for the rule of five.

No way. I even go a step further and say that from the three games I've listed from that year Star Fox Zero is easily the best by a comfortable margin.

While I understand it makes good practice for a metal concert (all the head-banging), when you can honestly describe your experience with a game as a literal pain in the neck...oh forget it.

I need to play Hades...

I agree.

But lots of good selections on your list! Hyper Light Drifter was a nice choice in particular, in addition to the stuff we already agreed on obviously.

Lots of good choices!

How's West of Loathing? That's another game I saw trailers for back when and thought it looked neat but just forgot about with amidst a whole bunch of other releases and never actually got.

I was going to write a post thinking "Wow, even a cynical asshole like me can come up with 5 games from the last 5 years to write about positively!"

...Then I realized you meant 5 games you liked from each year of the past 5 years.

It's lonely on the other side

I only review games I've beaten or almost beaten so here are my highest rankings from those years.

2016:

1) Stardew Valley
2) No Man's Sky
3) Batman: A TellTale Series
4) Civilization 6
5) Snakepass - 6.6/10

2017:

1) Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
2) Mario Kart 8 Delux
3) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
4) Xenoblade Chronicles 2
5) Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age S

2018:
1) Celeste
2) Underhero
3) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
4) Ghost of a Tale

2019:

1) Bug Fables
2) The Outer Worlds

2020:

1) Animal Crossing New Horizons
2) Hades
3) Paper Mario The Oragami King
4) Star Wars Squadrons
5) Wasteland 3

2021 - I somehow have exclusively beaten games that came out before 2021. I am working on 2021 games but haven't beaten any yet lol.

My backlog is legion and my tastes are odd so take the following with a grain of salt.

2016
1. Persona 5 (yes, I'm using the Japanese release. 2017 is crowded enough already)
2. Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice
3. Doom (2016)
4. Tadpole Treble
5. Oxenfree

2017 (God, what a fantastic year for gaming)
1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2. Hollow Knight
3. Mario Odyssey
4. Steamworld Dig 2
5. Hat in Time
6. Doki doki Literature Club!
7. Cuphead
8. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

2018
1. Celeste
2. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate
3. The Messenger
4. Yoku's Island Express
5. The Liar Princess and Blind Prince

2019
1. Blasphemous
2. Baba is You
3. Ring Fit Adventure
4. Gato Roboto
5. King of Cards

2020
1. Helltaker
2. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
3-5. Nothing. What a miserable year for gaming.

Not sure I can pull this off to my satisfaction, but let's try.

2016
1. Persona 5
2. Uncharted 4
3. FFXV
4. Dragon quest Heroes 2
5. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII
6. Dark Souls 3

2017
1. Nioh
2. Dragon Quest XI
3. FFXIV: Stormblood
4. Divinity Original Sin 2
5. Kingdom Hearts 2.8

2018
1. Monster Hunter World
2. Dynasty Warriors 9
3. Spyro Reignited Trilogy
4. Octopath Traveler
5. Super Smash Bros Ultimate

2019
1. WoW Classic
2. Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition
3. Kingdom Hearts 3

2020
1. Nioh 2
2. Cyberpunk 2077
3. Ghost of Tsushima
4. Crusader Kings 3
5. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV
6. FFVII Remake

I didn't realize 2019 sucked so much. I could list more games for other years, but not 2019. Luckily for WoW classic and Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition being so good. 2021 games have yet to be played.

West of Loathing is a fantastic game!  In many ways, it is how I've wished they would make RPGs for several years now (or at least 2D RPGs).  I feel like they took a decent amount of inspiration from the old LucasArts adventure games (like Monkey Island) with regards to world building and exploration.  However they made the rest of the gameplay a turn-based RPG instead of solving puzzles.  If you like the vibe of a LucasArts adventure with RPG gameplay, then I'd say you would really like it.
