Forums - Sales - PS3 overtaking the (Dead) 360 Anytime soon? Not really...

It's just fanboy banter. The truth is both are doing quite bad, compared to either the wii or the ps2. Basically, the 360 is surviving off America and the ps3 off Europe.

If you go by NPD numbers (and no offense to VGA charts, but NPD is more accurate), the PS3 outsells the 360 in the US. So if the 360 is surviving in the US, the PS3 is surviving in Europe, and the US.

Both dead in Japan.

Actually the last NPD showed the 360 outselling the PS3 as Microsoft finally started getting their supply issues sorted out...........

This.

Also, both jan+feb npd's showed ps3 taking back a mere 67k units worth of ground. It's not like we saw crushing months by the ps3 ala wii's record-breaking march.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

Care to cite sources that explain the 360 is only breaking even now? Last I checked, the X360 was being made for $329 + shipping and packaging in November 2006 . So chances are, it's making them quite a bit of cash (odd that the 360 has made profits the last 6 months for MS, eh?).

Either way, I've always said it's going to take a long time for the PS3 to catch the 360, and by the time it does, it'll be meaningless. What does it matter if the PS3 struggles to second place if it.....Struggles to second place, taking 3+ years to catch the 360? By the time the PS3 does catch it, the X720 or whatever will most likely be announced, while the PS3 is still making up ground to gain Sony a few dollars, so they don't have to write this entire generation off as a financial loss.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

ps3>360 ww= mid/late 2009.

So I did some digging around in financial reports for giggles because that's the type of guy I am....one with far too much time on his hands.

in 10/25/07 the numbers were:

Hardware:
PS2 - 3.28million, -.13 million from prev year
PSP - 2.58 million, +.56 million from prev year
PS3 - 1.31 million

Software:
PS2 - 38.0 million, -9.2 million from prev year
PSP - 12.6 million, -.6 million from prev year
PS3 - 10.3 million

with a profit of - 841 million dollars.

in 1/31/08 the numbers were:

Q3 Hardware Shipments
PS3 4.9 million units
PSP 5.8 million units
Ps2 5.4 million units

Q3 Software Shipments
PS3 26 million units
PSP 18.3 million units
Ps2 60.9 million units

with a profit of 133 million

so in the second quarter we had 60.9 million software sales total in comparison to 105.2 million software sales the 3rd quarter.

The hardware sales were 45.7% PS2, 36% PSP, 18.3% PS3 for the second quarter
third quarter: 33.5% PS2, 36% PSP, 30.4% PS3

So in essence, there was a greater percentage of hardware sales taken up by the PS3, but profit went up. Only thing that could have made up for this would be the Increased software sales. I wish we had some numbers for profit for each game/ console so I could figure this out, but I think that at the least, this shows that they made a significant decrease in the PS3 cost and I see no reason to believe that they won't continue. Whether or not they were near breaking even by the point of the 3rd quarter is debatable, which is why I suggest we don't really know if they are losing money on each PS3 currently until we get the latest financial reports.

disclaimer: this is all incredibly basic analysis that doesn't account for all of the different things that could have increased profits for 3rd quarter over 2nd and only looks at sales of hardware and software without including peripherals. All of these numbers were taken from VGchartz news articles.

"Hardware March 2008
1) Wii - 721,000
2) Nintendo DS - 698,000
3) PSP - 297,000
4) Xbox 360 - 262,000
5) PlayStation 3 257,000
6) PlayStation 2 216,000"

So MS gets the "supply issues" sorted out, and they outsell the PS3 by an astounding 5k in the US. Yes, I do realize you put "started" in there. MS needs some major games or a price cut soon because the PS3 has GT5P in the US this month, then they both have GTA4, then the PS3 gets MGS4. 3 massive games, and the 360 has only one, which it shares with the PS3. I'd say that the PS3 currently has the upper hand.

No numbers. just speculation. When OEM manufacturer stop supporting a big name like MS, there is always a reason we don't hear about. And if the failure rate is still around 30% then you have to factor that it.

As for what I bolded, your right. It doesn't matter. The 360 is doing well, and is a strong product for MS regardless of what the PS3 does.

Before the 360 can even think of taking on the Beast of BluZilla, a mighty dragon which has a decade of glorious pixel mayhem ahead of it, it would have to outsell the PS2. Let's check the record:

2006: PS2 > 360
2007: PS2 > 360
2008 to date: PS2 > 360

Conclusion: the 360 is being spanked by an eight-year-old technological relic of the dotcom era.

 so is the PS3!

ps3's price will eventually drop to a range which is very similar to xbox360, thats is when the 360 is doomed

I agree, though I think that if it does move huge, huge amounts of PS3s, then some might drop the 360 version that they are working on if they are half way through, it is unlikely, but the fact is that the Japanese do not like the 360, which is less of an incentive to make jRPGs, though as you say that genre is becoming more popular around the world. However, it is expected that by the end of next year, the PS3 will probably have overtaken 360, even though the US lead will still be intact, which will dent the likelihood of jRPGs for the 360 (though Europe is less of a jRPG market than the US)

BEST case scenario for the PS3 has it passing the Xbox 360 late next year (though to be honest if it ever REALLY looked like they'd be overtaken I think Microsoft would step up).  At the end of the day, I just don't see the potential lead the PS3 could get this generation as being great enough or coming soon enough to creat any exclusives for the PS3 it wouldn't already have gotten, or rob the Xbox 360 of any exclusives it would otherwise have had.

What are you talking about,,PS3 is  one year and five months old,,,,start of next generation is still way ahead,,I know MS will take a dump on their 360 user base (As they did to xbox)and start the next generation as early 2010 and stop the support on 360 due to thei limited # of game developers,,,,, people will realize that XBOX is not worth any money as it's always on a short life support. This was the exact reseaon that I switched from the original xbox to PS3 and promised my self to not ever buy another MS console.

On the other hand PS3 will last 9- 10 years and that's when you ll see the value in PS3(same with PS2).when they drop the price to 250 level then a surge of new user will hit the PS3 ,,wii owners that wanted to play RE5 and Final Fantasy ,etc.. and also lots of PS2 owners.

So you can say xbox 360 will be ahead untill the start of next generation but that's not saying much as it's one of XBOX short commings(short life span) ,,MS has 4 year life cycle instead of 10(hence much lower value as a gaming console).
