In terms of Q2 titles this year we are looking at the following exclusives:
PS4/PS5: Nier Replicant(April), Resident Evil: Village(May), Scarlet Nexus(June)
In terms of realistic expectations for the first half of the year only 3 PS4/PS5 games will be on the list. So far the biggest release on the system in 2021 is Little Nightmares 2 which is also a multiplat.
Replicant is releasing in two weeks and should give us a hint of what to expect for Village and Scarlet Nexus. At the moment I'm not optimistic for the top 3 PlayStation titles for this year being able to surpass 400K combined by mid-year. As I don't think Village will match Resident Evil 3 from last year due to downward inertia that we've been witnessing in terms of Software performance on the PlayStation ecosystem. It's clear to me that Square and Capcom are in far better shape than Bandai because both have both a PlayStation and Switch pipeline.
Scarlet Nexus is still a big question mark for me and Bandai, even if it does well - would it be viewed that way if Rune Factory 5 outsells it by 200-300K in Japan. At the end of the day Bandai seemed a to get a lot more success in the PS3/PSV days compared to what it was able to achieve on the PS4.. so they lagging adoption to multi-plat development has allowed smaller studios and publishers to eat away their market share.
As we've seen Marvelous has already managed to get two of their games pretty much outsell all of Bandai's best selling games on the PS4 and this is despite them basically not planning to bring Sakuna to the Switch and completely face-planting the launch of Olive Town.
Marvelous Bandai Top 10(PS4/Switch):
- [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin (Bandai Namco) - 585.212
- [NSW] Fishing Spirits (Bandai Namco) - 578.474
- [NSW] Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (Marvelous) – 269.842
- [NSW/PS4] Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin (Marvelous) - 227.674
- [PS4] Tales of Berseria (Bandai Namco) - 220.719
- [PS4] Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (Bandai Namco) - 220.195
- [PS4] God Eater 3 (Bandai Namco) - 203.554
- [NSW] Disney Tsum Tsum Festival (Bandai Namco) - 185.990
- [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 (Bandai Namco) - 181.090
- [PS4] Gundam Versus (Bandai Namco) - 175.581
Switch: Pokemon Snap(April), Famicom Detective Club(May), Rune Factory 5(May), Miitopia(May), Mario Golf(June)
For Marvelous the situation will further improve if they manage to successfully launch Rune Factory 5 and via updates fix Olive Town in the coming months. Unlike previous months, there is no competition for mindshare so if they manage to really put out an upgrade to Rune Factory 4, it should be their biggest launch beating out Olive Town which sold 202.396 physically. Despite being their best selling game with digital Olive Town failed to realize it's potential due to it's botched launch, so it could be that if they don't end up changing perceptions via future updates Sakuna might long term overtake it. A lot rides on how ready Rune Factory 5 is to launch, & whether they are able to change Olive Town perception as I believed that this could be the first year Marvelous manages to clear 1 million sales in Japan. I honestly think they should think about giving out the expansion pass for free. As they have a major opportunity this year to really capitalize on Switch's peak year. Rune Factory 5 pre-orders are trending well but as we've said many times before WoM and legs are key. That's the next third party game with big potential and we just hope that they don't let the opportunity slip away.
For Bandai I guess the positive is that they got paid to make Pokemon Snap, so depending on it's reception I could definitely it being a 500K+ game. Interesting that despite the massive success of Taiko & Fishing Spirits and working on a bunch of 1st/2nd Party games for Nintendo/Pokemon Co, their other franchises are fading. There is a rumor of a late port of last year's DBZ game but outside of that for the first half of the year they've basically only launched Little Nightmares 2 on the Switch, with the SKU heading to a result above 100K physical sales.
