Forums - Nintendo - Zelda Wii should use a simpler control scheme and a different design

I feel this would fit in with what Nintendo has been doing and be a fresh change of pace.

I think there should be less items. There are too many!

Look at TP. Sure, the game had tons of items, ball and chain, dominion rod, spinner etc. but how many of them actually got used? Pretty much the bomb, the arrows and the clawshot. I propose that these be the ONLY items in Zelda Wii! It will be simplier and the gameplay will not suffer, it shall require you to think more cleverly with what you use.

Every dungeon will not boil down to "blah blah, get keys, defeat miniboss, get item, use item to get to new places in dungeon, defeat boss with item". You shall have to use the items you have to figure out, not following a set pattern, and not knowing what to do with each boss.

There will of course be upgrades, you'll eventually get Fire Arrows, and Ice Arrows, and a double clawshot, but for the most part you must rely on these few items.

There will also be a musical instrument, whether it be a Wind Waker esque thing or a Ocarina, there should be one. There will be many songs you can play, and a animation that's easily skippable so that the songs will be easily used and played, and frequently. It will be put to many clever uses, even more so then in OoT.

Trapped in a burning room? Perhaps you should try the Song of Storms. Facing a evil vampire like monster? Try the sun song, it might just weaken it! Many clever uses like this would really help the puzzles in the game.

The sword controls would also be better. The direction of your swings would dictate how Link swung. Swing the Wiimote vertically to cause Link to swing vertically, swing the Wiimote horizontally to cause Link to swing horizontally and etc. Certain swings will be needed for defeating certain enemies or bosses! And the shield will be back as well. You'll have to use C to keep it up, so it won't automatically come up as in TP. It could also become a mirror shield later on in the game.

And as for this so called simpler control scheme? Here's my idea for it:

Link (image was too big)

So what do you think? I think this would be very nice and a great chance of pace for Zelda Wii!

I don't think you quite understand Zelda. Oh, and the WYSIWYG is broken for this post. Sorry.

I know, I changed it to a link.

And I understand Zelda fine. Think about TP

Items:

Bombs

Bow and Arrow

Clawshot

Gale Boomerang

Slingshot

Spinner

Ball & Chain

Dominion Rod

And how many times did you use the last five? Exactly, during the second half of the dungeons they're found in, the boss battle for the dungeon they're found in, and maybe 2 or 3 times.

The same goes for most of the Zelda games with a lot of items honestly.

I'll admit that there were a lot of unused items in the game *cough cough the top and wand cough cough* but many of them only had limited direct applications and numerous tangetial uses, such as the ball and chain being a great way to deal with those Redead guys.

More than reducing the items to a handful, I feel that more effort should be put towards developing items that have more uses and can be combined with other items for differing effects.

the use of the metal boots was excellent in Twilight Princess, though I can't remember if they were used in tangent with the hookshot like they had been in Wind Waker, where using the hookshot would commonly move Link to whatever target he hit, but if he wore teh boots, he could pull heavier targets to him instead.

I think the ball and chain actually is a good change from the Biggoron hammer, but still needs fleshed out a bit, Like being able to extend the range while you swing it, and have it wrap around corners if you did it right. Also you could have it used as an anchor if you were on raft.

the hookshot could have its capabilities improved by allowing you to rappel if you're against the wall, or swing if you're on the end of a ledge like how the claw in windwaker worked.
I liked the idea of being able to use the hookshot with a second hookshot, but i think that could have been increased to allow you to use other items while holding the hookshot as well, such as the lantern, your sword, a bomb, obviously not the bow and arrow, but maybe even the ball and chain, in case you have an object that requires even more weight than just the boots alone

Ultimately, I agree that it always seemed to end up bombs, arrows, and hookshot were just about all you used, but rather than limit the game to just this, I think you should be encouraging the use of items that have teh potential to be more multifaceted, and also trying to find new items that can be used in a variety of ways.

Seppukuties is like LBP Lite, on crack. Play it already!

Currently wrapped up in: Half Life, Portal, and User Created Source Mods
Games I want: (Wii)Mario Kart, Okami, Bully, Conduit,  No More Heroes 2 (GC) Eternal Darkness, Killer7, (PS2) Ico, God of War1&2, Legacy of Kain: SR2&Defiance

My Prediction: Wii will be achieve 48% market share by the end of 2008, and will achieve 50% by the end of june of 09. Prediction Failed.

I'm not disagreeing with the assessment that a lot of items don't see a lot of use. That's just the reality of the situation when you have a character that carries around a dozen various items. It would get annoying if you had to use every item in every dungeon IMO. The original formula that you must use the item found in the dungeon to conquer the dungeon is a good one. If anything, something I'd like to see in Zelda is multiple solutions to problems. Typically there is one solution to a challenge and ONLY one solution to that challenge. Multiple ways to succeed would be nice. ^_^

I don't know, it would be nice to see the items used more and the best way to do this would be to reduce the number.

While I like the idea of "what i find in the dungeon, is what beats the dungeon" it seems silly to get these cool new items.... that are totally useless thereafter.

kinda Off-Topic
but is it really going to be called "Zelda Wii"?

I really doubt it. But we have no idea what it will be called or even what it will be about, except that it's on Wii, so Zelda Wii is what we'll call it for now.

Kind of like how they called TP "Zelda 05" before it had a name (and before it was delayed :P)

 ok - now I know

i think rather than reducing the number of item, think of ways to make items applicable to more scenarios.. one major problem i found with TP is that you could do very little in the towns, and i think this would have changed if the items were actually useful to unlock new secrets within the towns..
