Honestly, I do not see the appeal. they're....fine. Great stories with bland gameplay. The Last of Us might be Sony's Halo. 7/10 game getting 12/10 love. |
Hopefully that means that you agree Halo has (well honestly, more like used to have) great stories then. Would be a pleasant surprise. |
Oh yeah, the story is pretty great. IT's got a grandiose scale and a backstory among the best in gaming. I just don't give a shit about any of the characters. It has an amazing world/story and probably the best score of any game in the past 20 years. No doubt there. I just think the gameplay is bland and generic while the characters are blank nothingness.
For the life of me I do not understand how it was, for the longest time, one of the most critically hailed videogames of all time. Even back in 2001 when I first played it, I just didn't get it so it's not like I have some sort of reflective bias or something. Same with Ocarina of Time, but that's a whole other can of worms.
but yeah, each console company has that one game or franchise that I just don't understand the appeal of. Half the Zelda games are trash, the other half are brilliant. Ocarina of Time in particular I didn't think was good in 1998 and still don't like to this day as I feel it has aged very poorly. Sony has Uncharted and Killzone and The Last of us, all games that feel like they have outstanding presentation but remarkably shallow gameplay, and I've always felt the Halo franchise was overrated as hell (I also think Forza and Gran Turismo are boring as fuck, but that's because I don't like the genre and thus don't feel my opinion holds any weight).
Of the three, Nintendo has the fewest duds, in my opinion. Even Zelda, a franchise with I think like 6 entries I outright hate....also has 3 entries in my top 25 of all time list. (Link to the Past, Breath of the Wild, and Wind Waker; Twilight princess is just outside my top 25 but still in my top 50)
There are also plenty of franchises I love with enties I loathe. I hate Final Fantasy XIII (Y'all can scratch it off your bingo cards), Dark souls II, Grand Theft auto IV, Assassin's Creed Unity, Mega Man X7 and the original Mega Man 1, Zelda Skyward Sword, etc. some of these games were pretty universally hated, others are considered to be masterpieces and I just don't get it.
