Switch vs Wii Sales Comparison in the US – Switch Closes the Gap in November 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

Switch Vs. Wii US:

Gap change in latest month: 1,117,754 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 714,581 - Switch

Total Lead: 5,087,427 - Wii

Switch Total Sales: 24,234,784

Wii Total Sales: 29,322,211

November 2020 is the 45th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Switch caught up to the Wii when you align the launches by 1.12 million units. In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 714,581 units. The Wii is currently ahead of the Switch by 5.09 million units.

The Wii launched in November 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

The 45th month for the Nintendo Switch is November 2020 and for the Wii it is August 2010. The Switch has sold 24.23 million units, while the Wii sold 29.32 million units during the same timeframe.

The Wii sold 41.70 million units in the US during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 17.47 million units to outsell the Wii.

This will be a tougher race for the Switch than worldwide, but I'm pretty sure it will still make it if they give the system the lifespan is deserves.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

It really does come down to the lifespan that will make all the difference. Let's hope the Switch has a good lineup for this year. I was disappointed with the 2020 lineup as Animal Crossing doesn't interest me. I'd be happy with a new Pokemon and/or 3D Mario game. Maybe even a new F-Zero or Diddy Kong Racing.

It's fun watching this one even if the outcome is clear at this point. They ran so closely for the first two and a half years or so, then Switch was like "see ya" and raced ahead as its momentum grew passed the point where Wii U and 3DS had peaked.

Gap change of only 60k in favor of the PS4 shows how much to a halt PS4 sales have come. The Wii was replaced a year earlier than the PS4.

Doesn't look like the PS4 can get above 36m anymore. Switch will surpass the PS4's lifetime sales during 2022 then.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

Why actually is Switch -vs- XBOne sales comparison in the US so different in terms of how the data are presented from Switch -vs- PS4 sales comparison in the US?
Why one is launch aligned and one is date aligned? (or whatever it is called^^)

Switch would be miles and miles ahead of the Xbox One if we launch aligned them. So at this point we are focused on Switch passing lifetime sales of the Xbox One.
