Forums - General - Sony’s Funimation acquires anime streaming service Crunchyroll for $1.175 billion

Do you subscribe to a anime sub service?

Yes - Crunchyroll 6 17.65%

Yes - Funimation 2 5.88%

Yes - Other 2 5.88%

No 24 70.59%

Total:34

Although Crunchyroll only gets the scrap anime after all the other companies get their fill, they have the best website and delivery service. It's a shame that will go away. I imagine that Funimation will be able to charge $10 a month or more once they own everything...

I'll probably just switch to Netflix.

Yup, I can just see Sony creating a PSPlus deal where you get it 1/3 cheaper or something and then you release a new handheld and see Japan handheld sales shoot up on a Sony device as well as possibly home consoles.

But would really like them to open a new studio that could bring some IPs to life. Would love a Samurai Champloo game made by Japan studios and Sucker Punch.

Well if that makes the funimation animes available on crunchyroll since in Brazil I can only sub the second that may have a positive impact for me.

Can someone perhaps school me on what makes crunchyroll a big thing anyway. I have some anime on dvd and bluray and I understand anime is going through some renaissance right now, but anything newish I have tried I ended up completely hating. (Attack on titan, kill la kill, space dandy and some others). Do people use it to watch older anime or just latest ones?

I do both

Hopefully they roll the accounts into one normal account so I don’t have to continue to pay for both lol

This kind of move, and not just From Software, is why i think Sony will make a move and try to buy Kadokawa corp., makes sense. It will be realy expensive, but Sony realy is putting lot's of money in the objetive to dominate anime industry. From Software comes as a Bonus.

People should maybe be a bit more worried about this?.
I mean we all see what happens when a company gets a monopoly on something.
Quality goes down and prices go up.

Which monopoly will they achieve if HBO, Prime, Netflix and several other streaming services have anime content and Sony isn't buying anime studios and similar, they are buying a streaming service, which other companies can make a new one.

I'm curious on what will happen to the crunchyroll section on HBO Max, kinda devalues the service if it loses the entire section, maybe they will strike a deal with Sony on hosting it.

Anyways, I doubt that they will merge Funimation and Crunchyroll though kinda wish they would but I can see a Disney and Hulu type of situation (though STAR which is the international equivalent of Hulu is being merged into Disney+ in international markets soon so maybe a similar thing will happen in the future).

That is the problem with so many companies on stream, the content is very fractured.

Yep, its gonna get worse in the future especially when they start doing contracts and price hikes - it'll be no different than subbing to a cable/dish service like yesteryears.

Jack Sparrow is waiting for me on the corner.
