Forums - Sales Discussion - God of War (PS4) nearing 20M sold, franchise cross 50M.

Seems like God of War is near or passed 20M, should be officially confirmed soon enough.

Thanks @Evilms for the info.

The New York Times ( https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/11/technology/sony-playstation-5-ps5.html ) reveals that the God Of War franchise has exceeded 51 million copies sold in the world since its debut on PlayStation 2.

Sales of the series reached 22 million copies before the release of God Of War Ascension and 29 million just before the release of the PS4 magnum opus.

In May 2019, the game had sold more than 11 million copies in just one year.

When all the data is put together we can infer that God of War (PS4) is near 20M sold. That is phenomenal and together with Spider-Man, TLOUR, UC4 among the highest selling PS4 exclusives.

Ragnarok on PS5 will be insane !

Sony let Cory Barlog, do his thing.... and instead of asking him to do a 2nd, when he wanted to do something else they let him.

That takes balls (from sony), same for Gory Barlog, to walk away from what would without a doubt have been another successfull God of War, if he had stayed on for next installment.

Only slight worry is its without Gory Barlog, right?

Also not forget when they wanted to move on from God War Sony allowed, but when that didn't work out and they wanted back they were allowed as well. A lot of money lost on that, but they had the confidence on the team.

Isn't Cory only on extended vacation? Do you have the source for he leaving SSM?

The sci-fi was the game that got canned because was to similar to Destiny. It was before GoW (when he wanted to move away from it, and then wanted back).

So if the figure is accurate, God of War quadrupled its popularity with the reboot, essentially becoming a juggernaut franchise. Spiderman is probably over 20+ Million lifetime sales too.

While I don't quite believe the numbers it is easily the best exclusive game that I have played, I absolutely hated the series before, but the feeling I felt playing it was just like how it was first time I played TLOU. I'm glad its the best selling in the franchise. I can't wait to see more of it.

Yeah, he's rumored to be developing a new IP with a 2nd team at SIE Santa Monica.

ResetEra has collected the rumors:

2. Santa Monica is building a second team (link)
3. Duncan Jones hinting at Barlogs new project (link)
4. Cory Barlog is teasing a sci-fi project (link)
5. Eric Williams is the Director of the God of War sequel (link)
