Forums - Nintendo - Could Age of Calamity do 10+millions?

The demo didn’t inspire confidence both in gameplay and esp in story.

Remember when people thought it was going to an actual telling of what happened before BOTW. The demo made it more of a spin off title because the random story shenanigans they put in. It’s way less canon than previously thought. Seriously hampered my excitement for it.

It's possible, but the game looks pretty bad. Not sure if it will have a good WOM

It doesn't look remotely close to bad and I don't even like musou games.

On topic, think 10 million is a bit of a stretch, but as a sort of mainline Zelda game, and being the biggest holiday release for the Switch in the covid-fueled 2020, who knows. Personally I'm expecting somewhere closer to 7 million.

Well, in fairness, the game does look kinda bad with its tanky frame rate. You can argue that's part of the cream and butter of musou games, but it's still not ideal.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Depends how it will be received. Over 85 metacritic i think it could. Anything under that nope.

Frankly I could see it happening, but it is a very hard game to predict since on one hand it is a direct prequel to a game that's likely to sell 30 mil, but on the other hand it is a spin-off that probably won't have the strongest legs since BotW 2 will likely steal its spotlight before too long.
I think it needs to have an extremely strong first quarter to end up at 10 mil, but since it is the biggest holiday game Nintendo has this year and people are hungry for more BotW, I do think it's possible.

I don't expect we'll be seeing BOTW2 anytime soon. Before COVID I would've said 2021 but now I'm thinking it's more likely 2022.

Well expectations vary. I feel pretty confident it will release next year. And I think a full reveal with more info on the game isn't too far off.

I wish I had your confidence. I want it so desperately badly. But the Zelda team always seems to take forever to make a new entry, and with COVID fucking everything up projects are getting delayed left and right, and Zelda didn't even have a release window or anything beyond a cinematic teaser even before the pandemic. If it's coming in 2021 I'd be overjoyed, but it's not what I expect.

Unlikely. This is not a Zelda game, it's a Dinasty Warriors with a Zelda coat of painting.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Well its the major new Nintendo game for the holidays, its a prequel to BotW with a lot more production value than any other "Warriors" game, and the game looks freakin awesome. I don't think it'll do 10 million but it should vastly outsell any other game in the "Warriors" sub-genre. Wouldn't be surprised to see it sell 5 million this holiday season and then 2-3 million the rest of its life. If I end up getting a game this holiday season it'll definitely be Age of Calamity, though if I don't end up buying it during the holidays I might not later because it's sort of like a hold-over game until BotW2 comes out sometime next year. I feel like it won't have great legs and then when BotW2 comes out people won't bother with it anymore because they'll be able to get the main feast instead of the appetizer.

Really? Huh. I thought it was a realistic possibility to release this holiday season. I feel like they'd have had to run into major problems in development for it to not release next year (like Metroid Prime 4 level of problems!). I'd peg it for a spring launch, or launches with the new Switch model whenever that comes out, maybe that's more like Summer. I'd be pretty surprised if it's as late as a holiday '21 launch, maybe it will be that late only because of Covid, but even with Covid I'd be surprised if it launches that late.

They're using the same map world, though no doubt with plenty of changes to make it feel new, and can reuse lots of assets obviously, and its a direct sequel so a lot of the mechanics are going to be the same or very simliar, all that will save a TON of time in development of the game. And they've been working on it for probably around 3 years at this point. A year from now that'd be about 4 years, which should be PLENTY of time given the fact that they can reuse a significant amount of the original. If they were starting a completely new game from scratch 2022 would make more sense, but given what we know about how much they are reusing I can't imagine how it wouldn't come out next year.
