Forums - Sales Discussion - VGChartz Gap Charts September 2020 Discussion Thread

Could you try and align the 3DS and Switch charts? I know the 3DS launched in the last week of February, but it would make the graph more easy to read.

---

The 3DS will go down in January or February.

The holidays should be enough to close the gap, with Switch on fire and Xbone replaced. Still interesting to watch though; Xbone's last stand against the Switch.

If Switch would sell 6 Million from October to December alone in the US... man that would be more than just absolutely awesome and massive and great and all extraordinary positive words you can think off. Switch would be even more than a gigantic monster then. Even 5 million in this 3 month would be huuuuge.

In 2019 Switch sold around 3.9 million from October to December in the US.

Unless Switch has an more than enourmous holiday season I think the gap will be closed in march 2021 earliest.

This monthly series compares the aligned US Nintendo Switch sales with the combined Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U sales.

Switch Vs. 3DS and Wii U USA:

Gap change in latest month: 510,051 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 4,076,286 - Switch

Total Lead: 4,049,888 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 22,099,339

3DS and Wii U Total Sales: 18,049,451

September 2020 is the 43rd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. In the last 12 months the gap has grown in favor of the Switch by 4.08 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the 3DS and Wii U by 4.05 million units.

The 3DS launched in March 2011 in the US and the Wii U launched in November 2012, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. The holiday periods between the Switch and 3DS lineup, however, the Wii U holiday is offset from the Switch.

The 43rd month for the Nintendo Switch is September 2020, for the Nintendo 3DS it is September 2014 and for the Wii U it is May 2016. The Switch has sold 22.10 million units, while the 3DS and Wii U have sold 18.05 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii U has been off the market for a few years, while the 3DS is still on the market. 3DS production has ended, however, the handheld is now selling under 1,000 units per week.

Neither 3DS nor Wii U were ever able to penetrate the public consciousness in the way the Switch has, so not even combined will they reach as many people. At the end of the day, the Switch is just a superior product, not just to either one, but even to their combined value.

The 43rd month for the Nintendo Switch is September 2020 and for the Wii it is June 2010. The Switch has sold 17.32 million units, while the Wii sold 23.12 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 35.

The Wii sold 33.88 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 16.56 million units to outsell the Wii.

Europe and ROTW is where Nintendo needs to step their game up and be more aggressive. They're untouchable in Japan and a titan in North America, but elsewhere there's plenty of room for improvement.

The Switch is gonna do great in the ROTW category for any home console even when you compare it to Playstation consoles. The Switch is only around 500k from beating the Wii in the ROTW category despite being less than 4 years old. I could see the Switch selling 15M in the ROTW. But yea Nintendo definetely needs to focus on penetrating the European market more, especially Eastern Europe. It's so far the most successful Nintendo system ever in Eastern Europe which is certainly an improvement, but there's still a huge market Nintendo could capitalize on in Eastern Europe like PS is doing.

Yeah I didn't mean to imply it's doing badly in BOTW and Europe, just that I think it could do better considering how unstoppable it is in North America and Japan.
