Forums - Sony Discussion - Pachter has a point: Sony blew it with the PS5 digital edition

You and Pachter are forgetting about used games.

The digital edition is forgetting about used games too.

Typical business analyst only thinking short term.

The PS5 discless version is the best console that will be on the market for the whole generation and it's gonna set a precedent for the future.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

The idea would be so much better if games actually cost the set amount the PS Store has in the UK. High Street stores in the UK (online or otherwise) charge £10-15 less for games because they are a competitive market. PS Store is a fixed market with 1 price. PS5 DE costs less and might be at a loss but they (someone) is making £10 more on new purchases.

Hmm, pie.

Yep, that's why Sony want you to buy the DE.

The big question is, how will be the reception of a digital-only console like the PS5DE, both by the consumers and the retailers.

Retailers make most money through the sale of games after all and generally don't gain much, if at all, from selling the consoles. So it will certainly be interesting to see how well they will stock the console in their stores - if at all unless forced to by Sony.

As for consumers, the previous digital only consoles (XBOD and PSP GO) were utter failures, but they also weren't really any cheaper than the versions with a physical drive. So it's gonna be interesting for sure to see what the $100 cheaper than the normal version will do.

Yeah Mikey forgets that Disk version means you can buy second hand games with no money to Sony at all VS all games and services bought goes directly to Sony's pocket

A $399 digital edition might be good for the consumer, but it doesn't make sense for Sony.

Thoughts?

So Sony is offering a hell of alot of value for the consumer (esp those that buy the digital one), to the point where its bad for their bottom line....

And thus they blew it?

As a consumer myself.... this is a good thing? Even if im not getting the digital version (or going day1 buy).
Why bother worrying about a big corporations bottom line?

I’d expect someone at Sony did the math at some point.
