Series S isn't for me. But I can see it being extremely viable in the current economic climate where the Playstation 5/Xbox Series X would simply be financially untenable for allot of people... At $750 AUD the Series X would seem extremely expensive to allot of people right now.
Plus digital-only is definitely a growing market trend.

Interested to see how things play out.

My argument for Series S is this; if you were happy with base consoles in the 8th gen, then you should be happy with the Series S. Series S is still a massive upgrade over 8th gen base specs. So if you are going from 8th gen base to Series S, then its still gonna impress. We are also at a point where most people are becoming okay with digital.
