They are doing the Nintendo strategy. We`ll know a month and a half before it launches.
Didn't Sony say earlier that the PS5 would have a limited launch?
Interesting that they're putting up a registration to buy one.
I do not remember if the PS4 had a similar situation.

This just helps sony gauge demand. And while they will sell consoles directly from their site, everywhere else that typically gets shipments will still get theirs and have pre-orders for them.
Its a strange new-gen no doubt, typically by now we would know the price, pe-orders would have already gone up everywhere...etc. This way, they can have an idea on just how many consoles they should really be trying to get out for launch while still not mentioning pice at all. Being that other stores won't put up items for pre-order without a price.
