Yeah indeed you make a very good point there, not only NASA has put work in this research.

NASA isn't changing any names, they will merely exclusively use the scientific designation (e.g. NGC 4567) instead of the nickname in their publications. That is all.

Unnecessary and wrong reaction by them imo but if they want to change their own nicknames they ofcourse have the right to do so.

It would be sad that those that found certain celestial bodies might be discredited by this.

They are also using inclusiviness and the like consultants to create new nicknames, it is on the second link.

Sigh.

Stay classy VGC. Why did I come to this thread expecting it to be about astronomy or science for a change?

Are the snowflakes the ones that are offended that constellations have mildly offensive names, or the ones that are offended that NASA won't use mildly offensive names for the constellations anymore? It's so hard to tell these days...

No big deal. Most of the matter in outer space is never talked about by the vast majority of the population, so it's completely inconsequential. As such, it's very easy to be indifferent about this topic.

Well I totally agree. And in the end anyone that is upset by any specific new name can keep using older name, but unlikely they will change any constelation or similar that are talked on more common conversation.

Very misleading title. They're not changing names, they're just dropping some nicknames. As pointed out in the article these objects already have official names that aren't changing.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Not really. read the second source. They are hiring advisors for new nicknames with specialists on inclusion and whatnot.

I’d also petition to rename the North America nebula. I don’t like being excluded as a European even though said nebula is only named as such because it’s shape has an uncanny resemblance to the continent of North America. It really keeps me up at night.
