The Legend of Zelda

This is one of the best titles for a video game ever.  Very classy and feels very much in line with fantasy at its best, focusing on the distant princess and quest instead of the hero.  I'm convinced the quality of the title helped to sell the game and gave it a sheen that it hasn't lost in almost 35 years.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

4 out of 5

Can't go wrong with this meat and potatoes title from early Nintendo.  Bonus points for having Link in the title without a pun.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

2 out of 5

Spoiler alert:  The pun titles aren't going to fair well in my rankings.

The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening

3 out of 5

It's alright.  No harm other than mild spoilers I guess.

The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time

2 out of 5

Not a big fan of naming the games after an item either.  In this case, an obscure musical instrument.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

4 out of 5

Didn't I say that items aren't good?  Well, Majora's Mask isn't an item.  And it and its design just set the whole direction for a game that remains one of the most disturbing and mysterious in the series.  Maybe not quite as awesome in a vacuum, but the title fits the game, and that's what counts.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

0 out of 5

Five-year-old me will always think "Wind Breaker".  Beyond which, changing the direction of wind doesn't sound fun (and turned out to be more a pain in the butt than a good mechanic), and the alliteration of the Ws just doesn't feel right for Zelda.

The Legend of Zelda: The Oracle of Ages

4 out of 5

Another solid title.  It makes you want to play the game.

The Legend of Zelda: The Oracle of Seasons

3 out of 5

Not as good as Ages, but good.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

1 out of 5

The word "cap" just doesn't really work all that well.  And Minish connects with "diminish" "diminutive" in my head.  Nothing about this works for the grand work that is Zelda.  Good game though.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

5 out of 5

Yeah, this is just solid.  You hear the name and want to know what Twilight Princess means.  It helps that Midna's awesome.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

3 out of 5

Small bump for the item title because it does sound rather intriguing.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

4 out of 5

This item title gets a bigger bump because the imagery it evokes is classic.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

2 out of 5

Get the pun out of here.

The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of Wild

2 out of 5

One letter!  One letter away from being an awesome title.  Breadth of the Wild would have been a 4 out of 5 easy and would have made so much more sense.  Instead they go with Breath for unknown reasons and I'm left filling in the blank every time I think of the title.

Overall Top 5:

1.  The Legend of Zelda
2.  Twilight Princess
3.  Skyward Sword
4.  The Adventure of Link
5.  Majora's Mask

You have too many “The”’s in front of titles that shouldn’t be there, and you're missing Spirit Tracks, Four Swords and Triforce Heroes (all of which I’ve personally found pretty mediocre titles even though as a game Spirit Tracks is actually great).

I like most of the names, but if I had to choose probably A Link to the Past, or Breath of the Wild.

I agree Twilight Princess is one of the strongest titles. Along with Majora’s Mask.

I didn’t feel Skyward Sword when that title was announced though it grew on me. Breath of the Wild is fine. A Link to the Past sounds deep though it doesn’t make any sense and doesn’t have much to do with the actual game (in case you don’t know; the Dark World isn’t the ‘past’, basically the name only refers to the link of why the Dark World is what it is and an event told about in the intro backstory. In that sense, BotW for example could’ve just as well also been called A Link to the Past). The Minish Cap and Triforce Heroes suck as games and as names.

The legend of zelda oracle of ages.

I would love Nintendo to remake some 2D Zelda games as 3D, Ocarina of Time scale adventures.
