kingofwale: You know not everybody wants to OWN every single movie. Hell, my parents usually rent ~3 movies, about every 2/3 weeks or so from Hollywood Video. They get to see all the new movies they want and if they really really like a movie then they might end up buying the dvd sometime, though they usually don't watch the movie again(unless it ends up on Satellite/cable)

Of course I realize not everyone owns every single movie, but to go and compare rental service with owning a copy yourself? How is that ever comparable?

The fact they don't have the ability for the owner to keep the movie, is to me, an incomplete service. Yes, there will be people renting movies, but there will also be people who want to own them.

Frankly, two services are needed, that is why Apple is winning in Digital distribution war right now.

I agree that both renting and owning would be something that would benefit consumers. As you said some people just want to see something one time and others want to own it.

As for Apple, well don't forget that songs/albums are also very small dl's, so it is very easy to quickly dl a song you want. (and to put it on your ipod) I think the AppleTV(movie downloads) hasn't been doing so hot though.

The size was HD movie is also a issue, I have 60GB monthly limit, and some people in Europe have less. If I want to download a 15gb movie, I want to keep it.

Or else I'm buying it on blu-ray. No way in hell am I wasting 50 bucks internet service on 3 RENTALs

wow, I was expecting something with a bit creativity.

but..

> Well, you don't need to watch a movie every day

When you say "don't need to", you mean "you can't because it's only a rental"... right? ;)

Just needed some clarification.

well, there is always T.V. which has movies on it..... and he said he only watches it once every couple months...

In my opinion though, i'de rather just buy a DVD, I like my things to be in the physical form

Sorry about the creativity, i'm dam tired.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... Wow, 60gb/month? I guess I've been spoiled by having no limits. On one torrent(NCAA basketball championship game) I uploaded about 120gb in 2 or 3 days at a sports torrent site I visit. (I've uploaded over 5 terabytes there since Dec., hehe)

Yeah, that does seem like a very limiting factor in dl'ing videos/hd videos w/digital distribution. Do you get anything by DD?

Digital distribution makes sense form a content creators perspective. They don't need to press the physical media, they don't need to ship it, they're under no obligation to create loads of extra content. Its makes more sense from a creators point of view then a consumers.

and yet it makes no sense in today's society, where the media itself is HEAVILY DRMed, the distribution method is HEAVILY flawed and the fact you don't even get to keep it.

In my view, it makes sense 10 years from now, not now.

Oh I know. I'm heavily against DRM and I work in the film industry! We're not all control freaks:P And as stated earlier in the thread 2 methods are needed, a rental one and full download that you can keep for good. All I was saying is just that it makes sense and at some point it will be the norm. I see the momentum of BR and the massive size of the DVD market and I know digital distribution is a while off majority marketshare. I mean the film and tv industry isn't haven't the huge problems that the music industry is so the stimulas to change just isn't their yet. But it will happen.

Also if you have a file that is DRM free then you can lend it to who you want I suppose. The difference being that how does the director know the file gets deleted after the friend has watched it? Maybe you could have a built in lend function that deletes itself after a few days? who know? But as for me I don't care really, things will get pirated, you can't help it.

I havent had download limit for 5 years! I pay £12.99/ month for 8 mb unlimited. You must be getting ripped off. Also HD films through Live are around 5.5 gb average.

I havent visited Live movie section since it was introduced around christmas(where they had like 12 films). I just been on at my friends and there is now 66 movies 33 of which are HD. At this rate by end of the year Live will have roughly 200 movies of which 100 would be HD. I cant believe that Transformers in HD in the shops is like £25, and on Live in HD it's like £4. Way to save money. Did anyone else realise there is getting quite alot now? Are you gonna use this service? I will when I get my new Elite in about 4 weeks.

Can you watch the movie on Monday and again next week?
Can you lend the movie to a friend?
Can you take the movie to someone else's place and watch it?
Can I pay for the movie and watch it within 10 minutes?
Do I have to give up my precious bandwidth?

It's like saying Why buy a car for 30,000 dollars when you can rent it for a day for 30 bucks

Yeah, "way to save money", no

 1. If I had no life I would do that. However my life is better than that.

2. No you cant.

3. Yes. The HDD takes 3 secs to detach from 360.

4.Yes you can start watching about 5 mins after download starts.

5. Your bandwidth is seriously bad. 8mb Unlimited here in Uk is easily affordable.

i would never use live for hd films or even psn.

its a complete rip, id much rather have a hard copy over a temporary installed movie.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I'm surprised no one has brought up the most important problem with HD off of live.  It's that it's not really HD.  If the average download it 5.5 gigs and the average movie SD DVD holds 8.5 gigs, that doesn't raise any questions to you?  Until HD downloads reach Blu Ray quality I won't care.
