Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What will be Nintendo's big 2020 holiday game(s)?

I feel like people are sleeping on the 3D Mario Remaster collection, Mario 3D World Switch, and a new Paper Mario game to carry them this holiday season. I think a remaster collection and Mario 3D World along with Paper Mario are big enough to carry the Switch this holiday. I know they're essentially just ports of older games but you need to realize that the Switch will likely be between 60-70Million by this Holiday, where most Switch games haven't experienced more obscure 3D Mario's like Sunshine and 3D World, so to them a remaster collection and 3D World are essentially new 3D Marios, and now with majority of Switch owners actually gamers unlike the Wii where it's install base was full of soccer moms, those 3D Mario games could be huge. Especially 3D world which is an amazing game that never sold well being on a system no one brought.

-Look at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, despite being a essentially a port of a Wii U game, it's currently by far the bestselling game on the Switch and it's because most people who purchased a Switch never purchased a Wii U to experience Mario Kart 8, making it seem like a new Mario Kart game for people on the Switch. Also for the few Wii U owners who did have Mario Kart 8, they're inclined to by it a 2nd time on Switch for the extra content, portability advantage, and convenience. The same could happen for Mario 3D, it's a game most Switch owners haven't experience so to them it's a new multiplayer 3D Mario game, also there's rumored extra levels in the game, making people who already played the game more inclined to buy it a second time, especially with the Switch being a good portable multiplayer system.

-Along with the 3D Mario remaster trilogy with a new Paper Mario, Nintendo could legitimately get carried by those games this holiday.

-Other than that, I won't be surprised if we see at least some type of Pokemon game release this holiday cause at this point any game with the name "pokemon" slapped on it will sell, and Game Freak/Nintendo are known for milking the shit outta that franchise.

-BOTW 2 might be a possibility, however I'm not sure if Nintendo is willing to release it along with the multitude of Mario games in the same Holiday season. Nintendo might think the 3D Marios are enough for the Holiday and bank on it but we'll see.

-In my mind only possibilities I see for the big holiday title is the Mario games, BOTW 2, and/or some type of Pokemon remake/remaster

I'd be happy with Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Basically a collection of the older 3D Mario games, but with improved graphics. Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1 and 2. I wouldn't be surprised if there was also Super Mario 3D World Deluxe Edition, that also comes with 3D Land.

With 3 years since 2017, BotW 2, Mario Odyssey 2 or Splatoon 3 wouldn't be out of the question.

Yeah I've been thinking about Splatoon recently wondering if they might actually do another one on the Switch. I figured they'd make that a one-game per system series like Smash and Mario Kart (probably still most likely), but I could see them doing another one on Switch. Mostly just because, while I haven't played the original, the feeling I get is Splatoon 2 was basically just a "more of the same" type sequel. That plus it came out just a few months after launch, and the fact that its sales have died off as it is slowly creeping its way to 10 million so its not like a sequel would cannibalize Splatoon 2 sales. I don't know in what way they could really up the game from the last one, but assuming they think of some stuff I could see another Splatoon on the Switch.

My hope would be BotW 2 does in fact make it out this year, or they've been keeping tight lipped on a new 3D Mario game that they plan to launch this year, but it feels a bit early for a new 3D mario game already.

BotW 2 coming out 3 and a half years after the first isn't impossible. At least since they are using the same engine and the same world as the first game (I think).

Yeah exactly. That's why I assume Nintendo's plan was for it to be the holiday title this year. Using the same engine, world, and a lot of the same assets would save a ton of development time. Seems completely reasonable they could have the game ready for this holiday season, assuming the pandemic didn't throw them off schedule or they didn't run into any big blockages during development. I still think BotW2 as the big holiday title is the most likely thing to happen, and it especially makes sense to put out the sequel to THE killer game that launched the Switch's popularity to compete with the launches of the two new systems.

Also, the way dev schedules work, they are scalable. So missing 3 months for Nintendo isn’t a huge deal since they can shift around resources if they absolutely must make up those three months. So, a 1 year plan can become a 9 month plan. That’s not difficult for a multi-billion dollar company. European companies manage to expand resources remotely across studios, so Nintendo should be able to do likewise, especially considering they have a lot in the same building.

Also, and I feel like I have been saying this for a year and a half now, Nintendo has been shortening the amount of time between announcing schedules and launch. It’s not likely much about their autumn schedule will be announced before mid-June.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Am I the only one who thinks all these mario rumors are completely crazy? We’ve now had reports that a 3D mario all star collection featuring all of the pre switch 3D Mario’s, 3D World Deluxe, and a new Paper Mario are all coming this year. I say absolutely no way that’s all happening. Like I’d give MP4 a bigger chance of releasing this year than all of that Mario hitting in Q3/Q4. First of all, it wouldn’t even make good business sense to do that, they would all cannibalize each other. And second of all, no way is Nintendo going to be that generous to give us all of the 3D Mario’s remastered in one $60 game when the reality of the situation is they could get away with charging that much for one. I think a much more realistic scenario is either a Galaxy 1 and 2 remaster (since those games already look pretty gorgeous as far as non HD games go) OR 3D World Deluxe OR a 3D World sequel + a new Paper Mario game.

Also, a Wind Waker HD port would be an extremely smart idea. It would require practically no effort on their part and would finally allow the game to be on a huge selling platform, since its two appearances so far have been on Nintendo’s two least successful consoles. There are still tons of people who have never played that game and it has aged arguably the best of any pre botw Zelda game and would help tide people over while they do ti he work on botw 2.

BOTW 2 and Switch pro . This holiday.

Or BOTW 2, Mario collection, Switch pro this holiday just like 2017. When they launched Mario, Zelda, Splatoon together. Animal Crossing, new paper Mario, new Zelda.

I'm expecting a good tentpole game this holiday season but does the Switch even need one? There's already a shortage. I had to give my Switch to my daughter (for now) because I couldn't even find one for her birthday. Nintendo is selling all that they can make.

Oh yeah for sure I think people are just running rampant with their dream Mario collection ideas. It's not gonna be like a ton of Mario 3D remasters or like an all in one with several Mario's for $60. It'll probably be Galaxy 1 & 2 HD as one title and a 3D World port, with maybe a new Mario game like 2D Mario or Paper Mario. And really it'll probably only be two out of those three things.

Yes!! Wind Waker HD is my most wanted port. I had WW on Gamecube but only ever played through the beginning cuz I don't even know I had a penchant for buying a ton of games at Gamestop back then and not getting around to playing much of a bunch of them, but what I played of it I loved. I wouldn't even mind if BotW2 didn't come out this year as long as they put WWHD in this Fall instead. Knowing Nintendo they'd probably sell it for $60 which would suck to buy an 18 year old game at full price but I'd still pick it up.
