For 2002 standards, the water in Super Mario Sunshine was amazing. It still looks fine today. I'm sure I've played Switch and PS4 games with better water, but they don't have the wow factor of SMS.

Yeah even though I don't like the game as a whole, Sunshine's glistening, rolling ocean is gorgeous to this day.

Over the years, there were a few times where my mind was blown:
-Wave Race 64
-Crash Bandicoot 3
-Wave Race Blue Storm
-Metal Gear Solid 2
-Super Mario Sunshine
-Grand Theft Auto V
-Sea of Thieves

Generally, the later on the list, the better with SoT being the best I've ever seen.

*Edit* Some people named some awesome ones that I forgot like Hydrophobia and Uncharted 3/4. Let me mention Astrobot Rescue Mission. You have to experience this to believe it. It'll have you literally holding your breath!!

I never played Blue Storm, but looking at footage online it does indeed sport some excellent water for a 2001 game. The Gamecube seemed especially well suited to water effects, when I think back to the best examples of that gen, most are on Gamecube.

Also, from my brief playtime of Uncharted 4, which happened to be the section where you're in a speedboat in a stormy sea, it also looks great.

I kinda forgot about Uncharted 3 and 4. With Uncharted 4, I probably forgot about the water in no small part because it was such a bitter disappointment...Cough. And yeah, GTA V was great too. Lots of good posts all around.

Don't know why but I always remember playing the original Pikmin on Gamecube and thinking that had amazing water effects. Probably doesn't look so great now but at the time it looked like real water to me.

Subnautica - entire game
Resident Evil 2 (2019) - transitions
Death Stranding - HDR

Honorable Mentions:
Minecraft
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

I mean water looks impressive in most next gen games now tbh. It's the one thing they've definitely mastered now. I'm currently just passing time on Assassins Creed Odyssey and the water on that is pretty much perfect. Whether it's sotrmy or just calm it looks just as you'd expect water to look like.

What about that Pokemon game that had too much water for IGN? I bet its water effects were out of this world!

Minecraft regular or super duper 4k pack and rtx enabled?

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

The first water to impress me was Blast Corps!

No, seriously it was Wave Race 64:

But I'd say the best is Sea of Thieves:

Signature goes here!

The game itself is dogshit, but Kinect Sports Rivals does have some great looking water:

Unravel also boasts some gorgeous H2O

Paper Mario The Origami King
