Gonna be honest, wasn't expecting it to score this high. Must mean the added content is really meaningful, or else the critics could've been more harsh on it.

If this game was exactly the same as the original, it would get a much lower score. There are countless examples of remakes or remasters that have marginally improved over the original game, but end up with a lower score anyway. It's just how things are, really. So for P5R to get such a high score probably means this is a big improvement.

One more thing to consider.
This is released at full price, for the exact same system.

So with that in mind as well, I expect critics to be harsher. And they may very well have been. Just that all the extra stuff outweighs the cons.

Persona 3 FES was similar to Royal. Extra story and gameplay elements. Even an extra Epilogue story after the main game finishes. (Only 20 hours or so, but still.)
And that game retailed at launch for $30.
Royal being $60 is a pretty bold move. But with that I expected a substantial amount of extra content. Way beyond FES or Golden. And that seems to be the case.

And anyone that doesn't want to pay full price twice should already be aware that Persona will have a second version, even more if when you see the review they leave some months unplayable.

Paying full price for a three year old game you already own with integrated DLC does not seem like an intelligent thing to do. Fools and their money.

I am more than happy to pay full price again for one of the best games ever made in an even better form

Would you not prefer that they gave loyal costumers who supported them in 2017 the option to pay have the price and download the Royal version to the base game they already own? Or at least have that as an option for people who aren't as, umm, dedicated as you?

I certainly would appreciate they allowing a 20 bucks DLC more than only the full package.

I would always prefer to pay less money, but judging from the reviews, the game doesn’t seem like it should be just dlc. So yeah I’m fine with paying for the full game again( plus I get new cool box art).

Yes we all would perfer it that way but i would definitely pay $60 for the dlc alone. it seems like they added quite alot of stuff

Well I for one won't be getting ripped off and won't be supporting this shitty practice. Three great games lined up this month and if they decide to do a flash sale a DLC prices down the road... maybe but they'll have to lube me up first.

A DLC add on update would be great. Though that may be difficult to do, considering all these changes are integrated into the whole game, throughout the whole game. In a similar manner, you'd have to implement this new data in appropriate positions on the harddrive's game file, to avoid search issues when it should be reading the data instead.
By the way, this is the reason why when you some times download a fairly simple patch on a current gen game, it takes a long time for it to install.
This is because it recreates the entire game file and restructures the order of data on it. (This was explained by Mark Cerny today in the PS5 video.)

Anyway, you have the option to wait till a price drop. I think the original P5 was $15 or $20 the other week. So I'm not sure I'd classify it as a rip-off.
But some people want to support a good game at full price, so that option is available too.

Considering Cerny presentation even making the whole disc again that change in the whole structure is the same. And regular DLC and patches also mixing along the whole structure as well.

So probably it is quite possible to make this a DLC, even if one where you have to redownload all the game (we have had day one patches of over 25Gb already =p)

The Royal disc should result in the same game file as a patched P5 vanilla, yeah. If they planned to make a DLC upgrade, someone would have to make notes of all the individual new files placement. Just thinking about how that may be more time consuming for some games than I realized.

Giving you the digital version of P5R instead of patching P5, if you own that game, would seem like a solution though.

Well I didn't say it would be easy, but that it would be feasible. And anyway doesn't really justify the full price for me =]

As a big fan of Persona 5, I don't think this new game is worth it for $60. Same could be said for DQXI Switch version.

As much as I enjoyed both games immensely, another $60 is just too much for the content offered.

At least Nioh 2 came out and is a completely new game for $60, definitely worth it!

thanks for the reminder - I'll update the OP

So, I have the original game since launch. I started to play it, finished Kamoshida's Palace... and left it there because... reasons. I loved the game so far, but everytime I thought of getting back to it, I just started playing other stuff and with time, I completely forgot about Persona 5.

Do you guys think it would still be worth going back to it (well, I would probably just start a new file, I barely remember anything xD) now that Royal is here? I know that one will have much more content and improvements... but I think it's a waste to have the original pretty much unplayed and buy the new one.
