Total Lead: 247,488 – PS4

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 8,834,192

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 8,586,704

January 2020 is the 72nd month of the PlayStation 4 being on sale in Japan. The gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 29,228 units in the last month and in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 292,647 units in the last 12 months. The PlayStation 4 currently leads by just 247,488 units.

The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. The PlayStation 4 has sold 8.83 million units, while its predecessor the PlayStation 3 sold 8.59 million units.

The PS3 sold 10.47 million units lifetime in Japan. The PS4 needs to sell another 1.64 million units to outsell the PS3.

This faceoff continues to be one of the more fun ones to watch; close fight even at this late stage in both system's lives.

If PS3 gains by as much this year as it did in 2019, it'll overtake PS4 by 2021.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023. (And over 130 million lifetime)

Well, this race will be over soon, unless shortages strangle Switch supply in Japan down to a trickle for an extended period.

Total Lead: 2,873,744 – 3DS

Switch Total Sales: 12,027,627

I still reckon Switch can catch up, as it still has a lot more room for price cuts and revisions, which should give it better legs.

PS4 vs Wii in the US – VGChartz Gap Charts – January 2020

PlayStation 4 Vs. Wii US:

Gap change in latest month: 78,917 – PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,988,141 – PS4

Total Lead: 8,397,912 – Wii

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 32,370,579

Wii Total Sales: 40,768,491

January 2020 is the 74th month that the PlayStation 4 has been available for in the US. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared with the Wii during the same timeframe. The PlayStation 4 has caught up to the Wii by 78,917 units and in the last 12 months outsold the Wii by 1.99 million units. The Wii currently leads by 8.40 million units.

Both consoles launched in November. The Wii launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 32.37 million units, while the Wii sold 40.77 million units during the same timeframe.

The Wii sold units 41.70 million lifetime in the US, therefore the PlayStation 4 needs to sell another 9.33 million units to outsell the Wii.

This should be a close one, and exciting to watch. I'm of the opinion PS4 still has a lot of life left in it, but another 25% of what it's already sold in the US in 6 years is a big ask, though not impossible. Wii really was a beast; I'm interested to see which console comes out on top.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023. (And over 130 million lifetime)

Booya. Switch absolutely has the potential to disprove claims that Wii U + 3DS comprised the totality of the audience for a Nintendo system, provided Ninty themselves don't fuck it all up after a strong first few years. I am starting to worry they're reverting to their old ways of arrogance and complacency.

Right now it is Japan where the Switch is the furthest behind the combined sales of the 3DS and Wii U. Worldwide they are pretty much tied when you align the launches. The 3DS and Wii U were pretty heavily frontloaded, so the Switch should be growing its lead or catching up depending on the country.

It absolutely should, if they keep going like they have so far, but I'm starting to get really worrying 2011/2016 vibes from their almost total lack of announced games for this year, like maybe they've gone full moron again and pulled support to rush on to a successor.

I really hope they don't make the same mistakes as the previous two generations. Developing games for one platform instead of two you would think mean a steady release of games. Right now there are no upcoming Switch games I plan on buying. If I could find Luigi's Mansion 3, Mario Maker 2 or Super Mario Party for $40 or less I'd be buying them. But for me I wouldn't get the full $60 of enjoyment out of them.

I really hope they don't as well, and after 2017 I was sure they'd learned their lessons, but with this year looking like a wasteland in terms of releases and feeling awfully like 2011 where we just kept waiting for news of more games and it just never came, I am growing quite concerned.

Animal Crossing is far bigger than any release the Switch had in the first half of 2019. However, second half of 2020 has nothing right now. With Pokemon Sword / Shield DLC there is no chance of a new Pokemon game this year. Also looks like BotW 2 and Metroid Prime 4 are still a ways off.

AC is indeed huge, but that's literally their only big game for the whole year as of now. Insiders suggest BOTW2 is a 2021 game, Prime 4 is still hiring people and probably won't come out til 2022-2023. It's a very bleak outlook at the moment, and Nintendo's history of prematurely abandoning their consoles makes me quite apprehensive.
