I see alot of people unfairly crediting him for the success of the 360, and while it's true that his Kinect fad did move alot of 360 units to casuals, 360's success with core gamers was largely due to design decisions and exclusive deals made by Peter Moore before he quit in mid 2007. Don Mattrick couldn't even save Zynga after he left Xbox, he resigned from Zynga after less than 2 years due to falling stock prices under his leadership. Zynga also improved considerably after Mattrick quit, just like Xbox did. |
Don kind of did the right thing with Kinect. It moved a lot of consoles and was a gigantic success. It was great for the console to transform from a HD console for core gamers to a casual alternative to the Wii.
The bad part is that he forgot his audience Pre-Kinect. AND he forced it on everyone with the Xbox One. That was stupid and ruined everything he and Peter Moore built up before. And of course the fiasco right before the release.
When it comes to "How The F*ck did this guy get this job?" I will vote for Phil Harrison. His track record is just amazing!
1st: Key position for the PS3 launch, which was a desaster.
2nd: Key position for the Xbox One launch, which was a desaster.
3rd: Now in charge for the launch of Google Stadia, which is a desaster.
I mean, after you failed at your job so badly, he still got executive roles at Sony, Microsoft and Google. Not bad.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
