Was thinking about this the other day so I may as well ask here since you brought it up.

But how long do games stay on Gamepass before they leave or need to be renewed?
Is there a set period, or does it vary depending on the game?

It varies, the vast majority are 1 year, but we have seen shorter deals like I think GTA V and RDR2 were only on there for 6 months.

And since you mentioned renewals, do you recall an example of a game that got renewed, and for how long?

I have seen a few games get renewed for a 2nd year, KH3, Nier Automata were both on there for 2 years before removal, while other Square games like the 10 Final Fantasy games were only 1 year. DQ11 also seems to have been renewed for another year, as it was added December 2020 and wasn't removed December 2021.

Answers in bold

I think the vast majority are well over a year.  I know you tend to focus only on AAA games, but the majority of 3rd party Game Pass games are indie/AA games and most of those stay on for years.

RIP id Tech it might be around for a while longer but I doubt Bethesda or even Microsoft would want to continue to invest in a proprietary engine that a single studio uses that only releases 1 game every 5-6 years. If their games were as big as BGS, then it would probably continue to thrive but so far with id Tech 7, it's just been DOOM Eternal. Or at least id Software have multiple projects at once to continue to justify id Tech's existence.

I think id Tech will be fine. id isn't the only studio that uses it, Machine uses it on Wolfenstein and possibly Indiana Jones as well (we're not sure on Indiana Jones as there have been some recent Unreal engine job listings at Machine), Arkane Lyon's Void engine is id tech 5 based and will presumably be upgraded with id tech 7 or 8 tech for their next game, Tango's STEM engine is id Tech 5 based and will presumably be upgraded with id tech 7 or 8 tech for the next game by Evil Within 2 director John Johanas.

I also suspect that id does have multiple teams with their nearly 300 devs, we know they have 1 team that assists Machine on Wolfenstein games, we also have heard they are working on both a new Quake and the next Doom (with the next Doom probably only being a smaller pre-production team).

It's a shame id Tech never became as widely used as Unreal Engine because with each new Quake and Unreal Tournament release, the conversation was always who had the better engine. It was quite the contender for a long time influencing major engines that are widely known today like Call of Duty's IW Engine or Valve's Source Engine with John Carmack even commenting "there are still bits of early Quake code in Half-Life 2"

I guess id Tech's downfall from popularity was just how open it was and how everybody could make modifications to it and end up making their own engines. Only got worse when ZeniMax bought id Software and it became proprietary.

Being born and raised in Dallas, even at one point for 5 years living less than 5 minutes from id Software's headquarters and going to every Quakecon for 15 years, and knowing id Tech before it was ever even called id Tech, this is a bigger topic to me than to most lol. Mainly because during the roundtable with Bethesda, Phil Spencer said he couldn't wait to see how id Tech would be used with more studios within XGS, specifically naming 343 and The Coalition collaborating with id Software. So I thought there was going to be this huge id Tech resurgence. Guess that didn't pan out lol

Has it been articulated somewhere that those deals were extended, rather than that they decided on a 2 year deal from the start?

Because if some games stay for 6 months and otters for 1 year, it's reasonable to think there may have been deals that set to expire after 2 years.

Not that I know of. I can think of at least 2 games that were on Gamepass, were removed from Gamepass, and then were later added to Gamepass a 2nd time. They are theHunter: Call of the Wild and GTA V. But these games that were there for more than a year, we have no way of knowing if they were multi-year deals initially, or renewed 1 year deals.

MGS V, Fallout 4 (still before MS bought Bethesda), Warhammer: Vermintide 2 and probably a couple more I don't remember right now.

Fist going through a wall if I see one more damn LinkedIn job posting

Also, new Tomb raider announcement is cool for me. If Sony does in fact buy them out, wonder if it would still be for Xbox. Interestingly, SF 6 doesn't have any platforms...

Unsurprisingly, announcing a Halo themed cookbook in the middle of a content drought for a new flagship title went about as well as pouring gravy on peaches

I have no problem with 343 licensing out the IP to make random crap like this because you see video game themed cookbooks all the time, but just the timing of it.....come on 343 lol

If season 2 doesn't knock it out of the park, which we already know it won't, public negativity is going to go through the roof. I'll be enjoying it because King of the Hill is one of my all time favorite modes, but can't say the same for a vast population.

Eh, it was likely something licensed out quite a while ago, it's a cookbook writer who does this with multiple IPs, I think it's a bit silly to ask everyone else to pause their job because an entirely different team who has nothing to do with your work has dropped the ball, Lol. Timing is unfortunate but at the same time, it's a frigging cookbook, Lol.

Kiki Wolfkill is doing an AMA about the Halo Show on r/Halo, I can't for the life of me think of why, that place is an absolute shithole lately and I'm feeling sorry for her in advanced

OH NO

Tell Microsoft to announce something. 😠

MS and its one event a year... 2.5 months of LinkedIn @NobleTeam360 if I gotta suffer, so do you.

There’s another thread on this topic, but looks like Saudi Arabia is becoming serious about the gaming industry. The Saudi Prince now owns almost 100% of SNK and rumored he may have his eyes on Sega.

Saudi already has a 5% in Capcom, so it seems he’s very interested in the Japanese gaming market.

I wouldn’t take that Sega comment even remotely seriously....
