Forums - Sales Discussion - Famitsu Sales: W47, 2019 (Nov 18 - Nov 24)

Lots of titles got a modest increase in sales this week.  I think holiday season has officially begun in Japan.  That kind of makes PS4 look that more pathetic though.

  • Switch Top 10 Software needs to sell 2.4M in order to surpass last year.
  • Pokemon is heading towards >2.5M physical this year in Japan
  • Ring Fit Adventure continues to have stock problems, once resolved it will easily enter the top 10
  • Super Mario Party's JoyCon deal will ensure the game easily surpasses 500K units this year.

From here on, I'm curious. The pessimist in me thinks it will sell less in the combined following weeks. We'll see.

No, it's not. During its launch year 2014 (February launch in Japan), the PS4 recorded a sub-7k week a total of 12 times. At times it was just above the 5k mark.

Let @nero know.  His chart shows this week as the lowest.

nero's chart is for 2019 only. The weeks discussed by Rol are in 2014.

Yes, Im comparing the chart for this year only 2018-2019. Don't have the data from previous years.

Nintendo Japan had to apologize for ring fit stock... yeah reaching a million for the year is now basically impossible

Regarding PS4, I wonder if it's that Japan aren't interested in it at that price point any more, or if they're just no longer interested in as a system any more.

I've been wondering the same thing as well.  I can see both scenarios as likely.  It is very likely that Sony cuts the price and then sales become much healthier.  On the other hand here is the other scenario.  Often when a successor console is released the previous console sees a huge drop in sales.  Well, in Japan they may not see the PS5 as the successor to the PS4.  Instead the Switch is going to be the dominant console for the next few years (home and handheld), so it effectively becomes the successor to the PS4.

The only way to really know which is true is for them to give PS4 a permanent price cut in Japan, and then see what happens.

A bit of both, a price cut would give a boost and raise the baseline a bit but it wouldnt stop it from still selling very poorly.

Its baseline is currently 7-10k at $300, maybe it would be 10-15k and $250 or 15-20k at $200 but in none of those scenarios would sales really be considered strong.
