Sony really hit the jackpot with the PS4....

not to mention, that this gen was probably the most valuable gen to win

going forwards ppl will have pretty giant digital libraries that they will expect to migrate to the next consoles, like they do on their smartphones, so the percentage of ppl going into a different eco system should drop quite a bit

Probably true.

What is surprising about this is that in the US PS4 success is not as impressive or dominating as in the rest of the world. In US Microsoft with XBO is going to end around 27-28M sold (even more than what PS3 achieved in US last gen). That means that the ratio between the two is around 57:43 or 58:42. In UK it must be similar too. Microsoft is in a delicate position starting next gen if they don't start as strong as XBO did. The console is ending badly in both markets and i wonder if the loyal Xbox consumer that helped keeping the sales very close to PS4 this gen will disappear for next gen or just switch sides to PS5. Even the next gen of consumers that never grew up playing with a X360 won't have the nostalgia effect either so they will go to the most popular thing at the moment. If the ratio in those countries grows closer to 70-30 next gen or bigger...., PS5 can reach a next level of financial success  and Xbox will find themselves in a very critical situation...

Japan : 8,3 million
Germany : 7,2 million
UK : 6,8 million
France : 6 million
Spain : 3.1 million

For comparison with PS3 numbers lifetime sales :

Japan : 10.47 million
UK : 5.92 million
France : 5.18 million
Germany : 4.54 million
Spain : 3 million

At first glance, I was surprised Germany came out ahead of the UK.  Then I remembered that the XBox is extremely popular in the UK.  The UK is the biggest video game market in Europe, but it is still impressive that PS4 has made such huge gains in Germany compared to the PS3.  Anyway here are the numbers that VGChartz has so far for generations 7 and 8.

Generation 7 hardware totals (in millions)

UK Germany France
PS3 6.12 4.74 5.42
XBox360 9.14 2.67 3.58
Wii 8.65 5.09 6.27
Total 23.91 12.5 15.27

Generation 8 hardware totals, Dec. 31, 2018 (in millions)

UK Germany France
PS4 6.28 6.43 5.11
XBox1 4.9 1.36 1.53
Wii U 0.69 0.75 0.85
Total 11.87 8.54 7.49

The UK is still the biggest home console market in Europe, but it doesn't have quite the lead that it used to.  In Generation 7, UK hardware totals were almost twice what Germany's were, and also Germany sold few consoles than either the UK or France for all 3 systems.  Now in Generation 8, Germany is a bigger market than France!  As said before PS4 is selling the stronger in Germany than any other European nation.  Sony has made some serious gains in Germany this generation.

So if the 30 million in the U.S. accounts 30% of its total sales... It finally did, boys!

Using the Yearly Chart and the Hardware Comparison tools I ended up with this for the US:

End of 2018: 28.248.598

Jan-Aug 2019: 1.733.071

Total: 29.981.669 (as of 31st August 2019)

Thank you! So pretty much right on

Would you be able to do the same for UK. Germany & France?

Unfortunately I couldn't find separate data for those countries, only for Europe as a whole, so all I have are some rough estimates based on marketshare.

  UK Germany France

Total sales as of 29th December 2018 (marketshare in parentheses)

6.284.400 (17%) 6.425.707 (17.4%) 5.105.243 (13.8%)
Total sales for 2018 only (marketshare in parentheses) 1.100.391 (14.7%) 1.162.537 (15.6%) 958.680 (12.8%)
31th August 2019 (using marketshare of total sales as of end of 2018) 6.885.977 7.040.811 5.593.945
31th August 2019 (using marketshare of 2018 only) 6.805.236 6.975.958 5.559.004

The first row is calculated using marketshares as of end of 2018, and for the second one I looked at marketshares for 2018 only. So total sales (according to VGC) for these countries, as of 31 August, could be somewhere around there. Maybe.

If the PS4 had hit 100m, then ZhugeEX would have mentioned it. Too big of a milestone to forego mentioning it.

ZhugeEx says approximately 30% so close but not quite there.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

I'd really like to know what percentage of US households own a PS4.

I'd also like to know how many of those PS4s are actively used (say, how many have been turned on at least 10 times in the last 3 months, or something like that.)

I'd also like to know those same stats for every system.
