I did some small adjustments to the PS4 as we got some new numbers from Analyst Daniel Ahmad. We were down by a minor amount in the US and UK, while Germany was low by a bit more. PS4 was adjusted up in all three of those countries.

Quite possible but the majority of PS3/360 titles were running at 720p up from the 480 of the Wii so they were still in the same region of pixels, but a ton of Switch titles right now are sub 1080p at 720/900p and I think the next gen machines are gonna be looking at pushing for 4k or 1440p at least in all titles, a dev wanting to create a game for the machine selling like hot cakes is going to need to do a hell of a lot of work to go from 720p>4k especially if they're going to be looking at the sales of one of those systems if one does great and the other tanks it's very unlikely that they'll get 3rd party love @ 4k Sorry I'm just looking through my crystal ball here and it gets a bit muddy at 18 months out :D who knows what happens, maybe it turns out that bitter taste on the Switch carts actually makes people die from dysentry 3 years after licking them so the Switch will have no install base when the next Sony / MS consoles drop. |
Rendering at 4K doesn't take more work than rendering at 720p/900p/1080p.
Creating more detailed assets takes more work, but then that never stopped devs prioritizing PS3/360 over Wii and PS4/Xbone over Wii U/Switch.
Third party's main focus next gen will be on Playstation and Xbox, just like it has been for the past almost two decades. Switch won't impact PS5 just like it's not currently impacting PS4.
Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

Well I just meant that no one will be putting out games with assets intended for 720p display on machines rendering in 4k, they would just look garish compared to real 4k offerings.
Say with things like the megadrive collection of games, those are coming from a 240p system and now being rendered at 1080p on current gen machines but hd alone doesn't make the game look nice, art departments will need to fully flesh out models and textures which will look at home in 4k.
You're right though that some AAA titles are going to be prio to the ps system and then due to similarities after you've made a ps5 game there's not much reason not to look at creating a port for the neXtBox
Fancy hearing me on an amateur podcast with friends gushing over one of my favourite games? https://youtu.be/1I7JfMMxhf8

Out of curiosity, what are these ports/remasters you have on your wishlist? AAA third party ports? Because then yes, the most AAA third party games on the system are definately past gen ports, then again there's hardly any AAA support from third parties so it's not really a big thing :P But if we're looking at first party games it's not really true. When 2019 is over, and we are looking at the first party published output there's 33 games that's brand new non ports on the system and only 9 ports/remasters. |
Oh off the top of my head - Hyrule Warriors, FFX, FFXII, Genesis Classics, YS VIII, Wolfenstein II, Skyrim, Minecraft.. Most is at least stuff that I missed out on in the first place or at least games I'd like to experience on handheld, but at the same time I'd like to see more brand new ips on Switch.
Didn't know there was that many coming next year though. Good to see the majority of titles in 2020 will be brand new. I feel like we've rarely seen the Switch hardware be full taken advantage of with most games, and that's something I'd like to see. Even BotW was technically a Wii U spruced up a bit for Switch. But I guess I just gotta go and get Astral Chain!

Didnt talk about a single 2020 game, just games released up until now + the last ones releasing this year. The majority are brand new.
