Forums - Sony - Sony aquires "Insomniac Games"

I’ve been waiting for this day almost as long as I’ve been a member of vg chartz. Congrats to both Sony and insomniac as they both have worked the best together!

This makes sense.

Its also yet another sign that for all its mis-steps, MS has some very positive impacts on Sony - no way this happened without MS' buying spree.

I doubt ms would’ve been able to buy insomniac, the way their exclusives for single player games have been selling. They sold 13 million copies with Sony. This is a match made in heaven.

Wow Insomniac games worth 5 studios Microsoft purchase recently

PS5 will be another winner and next will be Kojima production , believe it

Don't get me wrong, I think Insomniac is a great studio. However, they aren't better than Playground games, Ninja Theory and Obsidian combined.

It has been a very significant studio for PlayStation exclusives, this makes sense. But I'm not gonna pretend their games have been industry defining.

I don't think the purchase is as valuable to MS given Sony owns their best work.

Insomniac is probably gonna be the Spiderman studio for now, maybe with some other projects on the side. MS wouldn't be able to make Spiderman games simply by owning Insomniac.

Sony already owns their most popular franchises, so it makes sense. Good move.

Surprised it didn't happen sooner.

I suppose it was bound to happen with the crazy numbers Spiderman has done.

Does that mean Stormland is still an Oculus exclusive ?

I'd expect it to be exclusive to PSVR 2 now.

Sony want to make money by selling art, Nintendo want to make money by selling fun, Microsoft want to make money.

If Sony wasn't a company known to acquire studios, the claim that this was somehow driven by MS would hold water. But, because this is the type of thing they've been doing since the PS1, it's par for course, especially being Insomniac. If it was another company, particularly one known to work closely with Xbox, you'd hear a different tune from me. Unless we have a laundry sheet of them reacting to them, there's nothing to suggest it has anything to do with them.

I think there is an inherent contradiction in that statement, given Insomniac games have been producing PS exclusives since PS1 without being purchased.

There are new advantages in the current games market environment to making this purchase, including the PR win in light of Microsoft's recent significant purchases, and the reduction of risk - i.e. while I agree with other posters that the value of Insomniac to MS would be less than their value to Sony, an MS purchase given their current attitude would be impossible to rule out.

We would never know definitively how much Microsoft's recent actions in the market played in to Sony's decision to purchase Insomniac without Sony telling us, which they have no obvious incentive to do (both of these companies are very fond of pretending they don't react to each other's actions). In the current context though, some cognisance of Microsoft in making this purchase can be very reasonably assumed.
