Forums - Politics Discussion - Brazil is getting closer and closer to becoming a dictatorship

Ahhhh, what a fucked up world we live in. And us Canadians bitch about how corrupt Trudeau is and the like (granted, he absolutely has issues and shouldn't be in office anymore); this whole saga makes that look like a joke in comparison.

Wishing Brazil the best, but if even half of what you listed is true... well fuck.

Yeah, I always kind of scratched my head at what the problem is with some Canadians and Trudeau.

But this sort of crap is common. I've been watching debates and there were Americans who are literally convinced that Elizabeth Warren is a fascist who is interested in doing bribery-based governance all while declaring wars all around the world. Mostly a certain sliver of Bernie Sanders fans (you guys should stop, you're making it worse!) who think that only through the glorious leadership of Bernie will the US move to the left. As an outsider, I see like 14 or 15 guys/girls running for the Democratic Nominee that would be a fantastic US President. Bernie isn't even that much better than some of them... perhaps a little more mature than Gillibrand, for example (who, as I said in earlier posts, reminds me of Tracy Flick from the 1999 film Election); while Gillibrand is really snippy, she'd be a fantastic US President (and probably really hated at the same time due to her snippiness): Castro, Booker, Williamson (and that might be entertaining because some of the interpretation of the language she uses scares the crap out of people), Yang, Inslee; even the dorkier/less intelligent sorts like Beto, Ryan, and Buttigieg would all make pretty great Presidents - and Americans may be more comfortable with the dumber side of the left (American TV often portrays intelligent people as evil or undesirable so it's clear that intelligence is not a virtue over there).

But now I'm ranting! So I'll stop.

Have a good evening!

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Brazil's current government has all feature of a neofascist regimen.

We just need to read Yale professor Jason Stanley book "How Fascism Works" to understand why.

However, personalizing Brazil's problem on its president is huge mistake.

The real issue are the ones that elected him: (most of) Brazil's middle class.

Brazil's middle classe is were we will find the true fascists that intentionally (and proudly) voted for a regimen that would marginalize, persecute, torture and kill anyone who stands against it.

History will be merciless with them, just like it was with ones who supported Hitler or Mussolini in the past.

Edit: typos

It's deeper than that. The reality is, people in Brazil were/are fed up with politicians and the way the country is being managed for a long time now.

Whenever I enter a Uber, or Taxi, and I talked to the driver. 99% of the people I talked to wanted to HANG all the politicans. Literally kill them. I'm not kidding and it's certainly not a joke. Bolsonaro took advantage of this sentiment, and ran an aggressive campaign which became the people's last hope. Many were either clamoring for the return of the dictatorship,or didn't care at all anymore if it came back. This is how he won.

Another brilliant post full of miss information, congrats.

If you are going to screech fake news, then prove it.

What was fake? Why was it fake? What sources that you have that actually show it is fake.

The op provided 15 links to cite their sources. You provided - nothing.

Please at least have him analyse what is a dictatorship or how removing regulation and government involvement in citizenship lives makes the government a dictatorship or facism.

It is mostly very miss information and attacks on the generic "everybody how doesn't agree with me is a nazist", and also the infamous "the fascists of the future will call themselves anti-fascists".

It is actually crime in Brazil (slander) to call someone nazist if he can't show evidence of the person being nazist. Which he certainly provide. He can claim the president is dumb, makes dumb declarations, make bad decisions, etc, still that doesn't make anyone a nazist, nor does that makes Brazil a dictatorship or similar. I doubt we would see him posting about Venezuela true dictatorship, Left Party huge crimes in Brazil, the persecution in Cuba, etc.

So it is most a case of seeing dictatorship because of disagreement.

Did you even read the OP or did you just stop by to try and invalidate a post that says something bad about the far-right?

for the most part after skimming your op I'm not seeing fascism which is probably why he's implying you are being hyperbolic

"Fascism (/ˈfæʃɪzəm/) is a form of radical right-wing, authoritarian ultranationalism characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and of the economy which came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe."

you lead up to your last paragraph which apparently has examples of fascism with stuff like this

"Child safety seats no longer mandatory, and more violations permitted before you get your driver's license suspended"

what? i'm not saying that this is all you posted but its odd to list things like this since this as an example is pretty much the opposite of fascism

and your last paragraph can be summarised as "Bolsonaro threatened to" or bolsonaro claimed

speech is not fascism, do you have actual concrete actions taken by this man that could be considered fascist?

is the guy a jerk? sounds that way but that doesn't mean that he's a fascist, words actually have meaning to them

First of all, I wanted to make something clear: I'm not saying Brazil is under a fascist dictatorship right now. All I'm saying is the country is getting closer to one every day. The government has a radical right-wing, ultranationalist agenda, and everyday it tries to suppress the opposition a bit more. Just in the last week, Bolsonaro threatened to imprison a journalist because he disagreed with him, fired lead members of two institutions who gave him information that, although true, he didn't like, and lied about the military dictatorship - trying to blame the left - twice.

If something looks like a lion, moves like a lion and roars like a lion, you don't have to wait for it to attack you to call it a lion. Because then it's too late.

You again claim it is misinformation - yet you don't provide the actual information.

Your claim of fake news is ironic because after TWO posts of no information - it seems you are the one spreading news that may be fake.

Whataboutism is just a poor debate tactic. You can't refuse points for one thing so you go "oh yeah but what about this thing". This thread is about Brazil.  Trying to claim the OP is biased by bringing up Venezuela is pointless.

You aren't proving any points wrong, providing any actual information while waving your hands in the air and trying to distract away from the topic at hand.

Please enlight what news over there I claimed was fake?

What is fake is his title, interpretation and conclusion. But seems like you also have no idea on the subject. Goodbye.

with speech? I asked in my previous comment for actions or policies, do you have any to post?

"Just in the last week, Bolsonaro threatened to imprison a journalist because he disagreed with him"

as did obama when he was president, do you think this indicated america was becoming a fascist regime?

"fired lead members of two institutions who gave him information that, although true, he didn't like"

"and lied about the military dictatorship - trying to blame the left - twice."

i'd need to see more context on these

Nice to see that most people seem to get this, with just a handful of the usual disingenuous suspects coming to play devil's advocate.
