Edited. I really shouldn't post threads before my morning coffee, I am a zombie before I partake of the bean.
At a lot of the places where this has been posted the excuse of "of course it did, it's a portable" has been bandied about a lot, but I feel this is an oversimplification. After all, Vita being portable didn't stop the PS4 outselling it in Japan.
If someone comes with the "it's portable" excuse, you just need to remind them that "it's portable" was very much denied or downplayed by often the same people when it came to evaluating the Switch's prospects before it launched.
As Switch continues to sell well and grows from year to year, it will become more prevalent that detractors will try to shove it into the handheld corner, because Nintendo cannot truly beat Sony when Nintendo is in a different market. We are still in the early phase that is called denial, so the hopes are that Switch sales will fall off a cliff soon enough, even though hardly anyone dares to openly say it. But you know that the maths of people who expect lifetime sales similar to the 3DS can't add up any other way. Similarly, those who expect Switch to fizzle out in the 80-100m range also hold the stance that a Nintendo console cannot last, so despite Switch being in a much, much more favorable position than the 3DS, it's predicted to beat the 3DS only barely.
