While I do miss the sheer traffic and spectacle of the old days, I sure don't miss the rampant trolling and bickering. Overall, vgchartz has undergone a vast transformation since I joined. The internet is still full of morons, but the style of the moderation and the overall ambiance of this place has evolved into something that works properly and doesn't really attract these, which is a first as far as forums go (in my experience). I would rather have better discussions than lots of discussions - if I had to choose.
We're not dead, which in itself is a fantastic achievement, most sites, and forums that lived past a decade are owned and run by huge corporate entities or companies or are simply tiny niche things for followers of specific games, books, or other phenomena. It's amazing we're still around, and I'm always happy when I see other veterans posting, I feel like I really know these people despite never having met them in real life.

This is something I totally agree with. Interaction in this site has become mostly fantastic and cozy, if anything. Last couple of months has seen a dramatic reduction in threads created, though, but that's just an impression of mine.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Bold isn't true at all...

In fact in my entire history of being on this site I've never seen a thread locked because it was discussed in a Nation thread, Lol.

A lot of stuff discussed in Nation threads have dozens of comments in the Articles created on the same subject too. Users are clearly discussing the stuff in Articles still and not threads because nobody makes threads on the subject matters to begin with, Lol.

People have to actually make the threads first, one time it was Curl soloing all the thread creation, I made a lot of threads recently, it shouldn't be down to just a few people though, we've all got to chip in, there was a time where all 3 Nation threads were massively more popular than they are today and the forums were also thriving overall.

I used to make threads all the time and stopped for the very reason that they kept getting closed because those topics were "Already being discussed".

I can tell you that the reason for that was almost definitely not because the topic was being discussed in the Xbox, Playstation or Nintendo mega threads, I've never seen that happen and it would be stupid for any Mod to do that.

What is more likely is that it was locked because there was already a thread on the specific subject matter or it could have been a thread on a topic which had a lot of activity (I.E. in terms of threads) so the Mods decided to move the discussion to a centralised location to curb the 'spam'

An example could be, we have a official thread for Elden Ring and users start creating individual threads for their impressions, if we start getting a bunch of threads for each users impression then that's a bit overwhelming/spammy, don't want every thread on the front page to be "Elden Ring Impressions!" so we could tell the user to instead post their thoughts in the official thread.

I don't know what happened in your case but I can tell you that I as OP of Xbox Empire would never lock someone's thread because it was discussed in my thread first, in fact, I've made a lot of threads on the subject matters I've posted in Xbox Empire.

@Serious_frusting

6/66 of your threads have been locked.

  • 1 for NSFW language in the title.
  • 1 was simply you reporting a Spambot so it didn't need to remain open.
  • 1 was locked to tell you to create it in another forum topic.

That leaves 3 left.

Locked: Playstation 3 SLIM just been CONFIRMED.

This has no reason given which a Mod should do, I'm going to assume it was due to someone already creating a thread on the topic though.

Locked: Now Microsoft conference is over. PS3 officially GRAPHICS KING!!!!!

This has no reason given, the Mods should have done so but if I were to guess, I'd assume they'd have believed it to be a little on the console war bait side.

Locked: Not only is the Wii bubble going to burst but it will EXPLODE!!!!

This was the thread which Mods told you to move to Gaming, as for why it was locked the 2nd time, I don't know, since they allowed you to keep it open the first time, they even told you to create it elsewhere so they definitely didn't lock it because it was already being discussed elsewhere.

-

You don't have to worry about threads created for news being locked unless they've already been posted as individual threads.

This is why I continue to visit this site.  I’m not a huge fan of trolls and general spam.  A smaller forum means you actually get to know the people you’re talking to.  It doesn’t have to be a bad thing that there aren’t thousands of posts a day from thousands of people.  It’s actually the reason I’ve continued on this site.

Seems pretty activé to me.

Mods and the powers that be as long as the site still have people who can work on it, will always try to change things up. Mods aren't as crazy as they once were here and have learned over the years what is too much and what is too little.

All you can do if still here is hope for the best with change. There has been a lot. Site still here.

The downfall of this site were certain ban happy mods and the constant complaining from ninty fans. The removal of the sales graphs and charts.
For me personally what killed the forum aspect was the "official" Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft threads that lump all the discussions and news together. Threads get closed because what you want to talk about has already ever so slightly been mentioned in the official threads amongst another 100 topics running simultaneously. It's a cluster F.
Just my 2 pence.

Well i dont know about that, but the downfall and mass exodus of the PlayStation community here was cause by a official thread, not because it was created but because two mod decided to harass and annoy as much as they could people in it to the point half ps fans here just said fuck you and left.

Wow, when was that?

I can agree with obieslut that the former mod team would lock threads because of duplicates/outside nation/official threads but that must have been over 10 years ago

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Does anyone else delete most of their comments before they hit send? Some arguments just aren’t worth getting into. There was a time I sat in front of my computer for hours at a time with this site. Those days, especially because of smart phones, are long gone. If I’m at a computer for that long, it’s because I’m working.

Not most, but definitely more than a few times. Or just don't respond in general. Happened a few moments ago.

I dont but that rewards you with bans for things like "no shit sherlock"

I agree that the nation threads seem to be a net negative. They'd be fine if they stuck only to discussions that aren't a big enough deal to warrant their own thread. But, as it is, most major pieces of platform specific news get a bunch of their discussion inside of the nation threads. The problem is that it is sometimes difficult to have a good discussion about a specific topic in those threads, because there are multiple topics running at once.  But, because there is discussion about a given topic happening in there, it likely leads to less interaction in the topic specific thread.

I think the nation threads are great for the relatively small number of users that spend a lot of time in them. But, for the rest of us, and certainly for any newcomers, they're sometimes not the greatest places to jump into a discussion.

At least, that's how it feels to me.
