Forums - General - Have you ever faced unemployment or long term unemployment before?

I did quite a few driving lessons and I failed the test twice in a month, 10+ years ago and realised it was too expensive and I am not that keen on driving anyway and did not bother wasting more money on something that I was not that interested in pursuing. Having a driver's license may have helped me get into taxi driver, and get to places that requiring travelling to work where public transport does not go to. I have never held a driver's license, it is shameful to admit to that but my issues have prevented me from doing it. I was so anxious and just could not cope with the pressure of driving. Anticipate what other cars are doing and so many things going on was sensory overload. In Australia it is very hard to obtain a job without a car license, because public transport is terrible

I see you are from Australia - greetings fellow Aussie. I have dealt with Mental Health issues before that affected my ability to work, but was forced into overcoming them for the sake of my wife, and now my son. I've been depression free for at least two years now. I also had problems communicating with people (was very withdrawn/anxious, people saw me as shy) but have overcome that. I only started working at age 23 or so tbh, was studying and/or bludging before that. Had a rough relationship with work since then but managed to find something that suited me. I think I read something before about you not liking "working for the man"? I believed this and espoused it for yonks.

I know our situations and experiences are different (though I do relate to some of it) but happy to have a chat over the phone some time next week and lend an ear (would do lunch but I am in Sydney). Let me know!

Note: It is natural to want to do something and be productive, you should be upset at being deprived of this but let those emotions spur you into action rather than further into sorrow. Everyone can give you advice but ultimately the motivation has to come from within you.

Or let someone else do the call for him in his name, if he has any family that wants to help him out although it does not seem like it.

Job agencies will also help you write a cover letter and resume etc (hell i offered to help in the last thread).

The dole program offers the opportunities to learn these thing. In fact many years ago they would force you to do refresher courses once a year. They would show you how to write letter and resume and even do mock interviews and ask you questions and you would answer them. Then they would give you tips on how to improve.

The fact that he just assumed his marks are too low to get in a graduate program and "too many step" to become a grad just shows he never wanted to be in that field to begin with.

I bet if he walked around Perth and looked a windows signs someone would have a sign that says hiring. There he can go in and explain his situation and ask for a chance. Some shops would be more than willing to give him a crack. Not many people out there go out of their way to show they want any job, hence why I said in another post employees resort to work visas to get people in from Asia etc to work. To many Aussies think certain jobs are beneath them and expect good money.

I was lucky I started as a graduate engineer, but even then for an engineer I earned 35K, that is sweet fuck all money. I stuck it out and now im pushing 6 figures.

As we have talked about before, the issue is his mind set, unless he is willing to listen to some and not look for acceptance he is a failure, he will never take steps to improve. Some of us (you and me included) are trying hard for months to help him. But the walls he has not even the Night King from GoT be able to knock down lol.

I agree,in my opinion he should take a huge step back and stop focussing on not getting a job but focus on things that would make it more doable to search for a job like interaction with people.

Bolded:Checked AUS salaries compared to Europe countries and damn you guys have a good income over there, thats why aussies are so laid back ! ;)

Many businesses want 2 or 3 years experience in any job + reference checks. I do not have the experience. It is catch-22 of need a job with experience to get another job. When you have no experience and then it is very hard to find any job.
I am on the disabled pension, not the dole. There is a big difference. I would only want to do a job that is flexible and I turn up when I feel like it. Volunteering may be my best option.

They may write that but generally that means no experience.

When they right 5-7 yeas they relaly mean we will settle form someone with 3-4 if they can demonstrate to be a good person.

It has been 10+ years since I held a job and it has been 10 years since I graduated with an accounting degree. I doubt I will be able to handle working with others or heaven forbid dealing with management or with customers. Small issues that so many people will dismiss can set me off on a  downward spiral.

Alright but this is something to begin with, lets stop the focus on getting a job and try to make a lightly social contact a step further than this forum.

Getting a job should be of no concern for you atm but practicing interaction with people should be and if you do it enough you might be getting a bit more skilled in it even while the stress stays the same(because hey us autist will always get stress from it;) ) so that after a good amount of time you can muster enough confidence to go look for a job while throwing yourself into the needed social interaction, will still be a lot of stress but it might become doable.

Feels like we are coming full circle, we said this to him on my wall lol.

Hopefully if we say it enough times he may do it.

If you can get through to him let us know we have been trying.

He is in Perth so may need to talk after work Sydney time.

PS - Thanks for sharing your story

Yer staring salary is shit (tbh engineering now starting is about 70k) but once you prove your worth it goes up from there.

The only negative here is the cost of owning a house FMD and cost of living.

When I visited the US and saw them complain a car that costs half what it does here I just laughed.

I originally come from eastern Europe so I know how much of a shithole of a life can be (I still have family there ad I know how much our lives are different).  That is why here life is soooo much easier. Yes there is some 1st world problems, but unless you truly experience like there is no hope, Australia looks like a land of opportunity.

Dude you have options. Research a number of Small businesses you can start online for low costs. Everyone has a skill that can make them money.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Keep in mind that's Australian dollar, not US dollar. 35k AUD is about 22k Euro.

But yeah, considering the median wages in Belgium (stop me if I'm wrong with the country), that's still a lot.

This thread just seems like you're reaching further and further for people to give you Pity or agree with your stance on life and not wanting to work or not wanting to be told no, most people deal with getting told no when they're sub 10 years old, they throw a tantrum and then figure that doesn't change the situation.

Everyone hates getting told no or having an interview go wrong, that's a part of living. If everyone took your stance of thinking about work as slavery and didn't do it... Where would welfare payments come from?

I would say this is not helping.  Its evident that this person has real issues and throwing your judgement into the mix only just cause more judgement.

One thing I have found in life is that you give the listener the information and let them digest it.  They may not get it at first but as time goes on this thread could be a reference to ideals this person can try that may help.  A change in perception, an opportunity that comes out of no where anything can trigger moving forward.  You have provided some very good tips lets continue those good tips and let the reader get a chance to digest and consume at their own pace and hopefully something works.
