Peaceful protest doesn't accomplish a whole lot unless you have overwhelming numbers on your side as Gandhi did in India against the relatively tiny number of British forces there.
Looting/rioting is regrettable and I don't like it, but it does make more of an impact whether people want to admit it or not. When it comes to basic human rights, violence is sometimes the answer. We don't live in a world of lollipops and raindrops and if you're privileged enough that you think that's how it is for everyone, then the issue of perception there is that yours is faulty. The fact that it has to go to that point for people to be properly heard is the fault of the system.
The only reason the cop that killed this guy was arrested was because of violent protest. Otherwise he would've gotten away with it most likely with a slap on the wrist and probably even have been able to resume working the streets after a few months.
