Peaceful protest doesn't accomplish a whole lot unless you have overwhelming numbers on your side as Gandhi did in India against the relatively tiny number of British forces there.

Looting/rioting is regrettable and I don't like it, but it does make more of an impact whether people want to admit it or not. When it comes to basic human rights, violence is sometimes the answer. We don't live in a world of lollipops and raindrops and if you're privileged enough that you think that's how it is for everyone, then the issue of perception there is that yours is faulty. The fact that it has to go to that point for people to be properly heard is the fault of the system.

The only reason the cop that killed this guy was arrested was because of violent protest. Otherwise he would've gotten away with it most likely with a slap on the wrist and probably even have been able to resume working the streets after a few months.

Yes, because you're teaching those racist cops and white men a thing or two by destroying your own businesses and spreading the corona virus rapidly in your own community.

How many times have oppressed people gained rights through peaceful protests compared to gaining them by riots/looting?

The Civil Rights Acts of the 60s were both times spurred by the powers that be being terrified of wide spread riots ... so actually quite often.

Violence is the only language oppressive forces often understand, they don't give a crap about "peaceful" people walking down a street on a Sunday.

The only reason the cop in this case is likely headed to jail is because of violent protest. If those people just "took a knee" or some other symbolic gesture, fuck all would've been done. This would have been brushed under the rug.

Because there's decades worth of statistics and cases that show it's extremely difficult for a police officer in these situations to serve jail time. This guy still might able to get off scott free, though I'm guessing jurors are going to nervous at what could happen if things going that way.

Not to mention they were very obviously dragging their feet on arresting this guy as it was ... they only did so after several days of violent protest. They had the video tape showing them all they needed to see for days at that point and had taken zero action.

They were hoping this would blow over and be forgotten, and then shit their pants when they realized the scope of the anger about this and had no choice then but to arrest this guy. They still don't want to charge the other 3 officers to just standing by doing nothing, but they may well be forced into having to charge them too.

Trump has always been after the media... attacking reporters, starting the #fakenews defense any time a journalist didnt kiss his arse.

But have you guys notice how many police seemingly purposefully attack the news? reporters? and journalists?
Guess you guys dont want a free press, or might possibly lose it if things continue down this road.

Dont worry, Trump will close down social medias for you, and give you a propaganda tv channel instead :P

(on a serious note, I can hardly believe whats happending in the US. sad state of affairs)

This is just sickening, what they are doing to their own citizen they are sworn to protect and to serve in general and to the press in special.

Gandhi also had the benefit of Britain's instability at home. Britain was bankrupt. They'd just fought a devastating war to keep Germany from invading Britain simultaneously with a long-running guerrilla war against the Haganah, Irgun, and Lehi in Palestine that culminated in the assassination of Britain's top official in the Middle East, Lord Moyne, by the Lehi. Britain had neither the appetite nor the money to repeat that experience on a much larger scale in India.

Yep thats what I was getting at. Very rarely will an oppressive force concede because they were asked nicely.
