Forums - Politics Discussion - President Trump Signs Executive Order Protecting Free Speech On College Campuses | TIME

Also, Liberty University receives federal funding, as do other conservative religious schools. Will those schools be forced to allow pro-LGBT speech or left-wing speech on their campuses? What if this concept starts to get further weaponized and expanded by both sides to threaten any private institution that gets a leg up from the state? Will Facebook and Google stop getting tax breaks for deplatforming conspiracy nuts? How far can this go?

Unfortunately, as much as I would laugh my ass off if Liberty University were caught under this, everything I've read indicates that the only way Liberty University gets federal funding is through student tuition (loans, grants, etc) and that is exempt from the executive order. I had assumed they much get some money from somewhere else, basically any university doing any kind of research will get federal grants somewhere. Not sure why I assumed that Liberty University actually does legitimate research, guess that's my naivety showing.

Some have policies that limit what you can say.

Admittedly, they do have a strict intolerance towards plagiarism.

and socialists on campus have a strict inolerance towards anyone who is not a socialist

imo its not the governments place to enforce this but with the way things are going with leftists on campus actively denying free speech, i really don't know

So another double edge sword for something that isn't well thought out and doesn't do anything that wasn't already protected under law. So what exactly will this executive order do that is different then what is already protected under free speech. Is this one of those grandstanding type of EO where its suppose to put a smile on Trump base while actually doing nothing. Sort of like that dumb middle class tax which was coming around the midterm elections which never appeared. There is nothing within the EO that changes anything for a Public University. They still are not required to fund any speakers other than what they want and the are not required to give a platform to anyone they do not support. If anything, private universities mainly christian ones will have to look at this EO and see if this will interfere with how they allow such public speaking events to go.

I am really conflicted on that,if there is something signed to protect free speech while in its previous state it already had a similar protection then it is kinda(must be?) logical to assume that this certain protection has even stricter rules now no?

Grandstanding or not,if grandstanding enforces better free speech then thumbs up.

It’s kind of funny how Trump seems to be pro-free speech now when he has said so much against it during his presidency. Perhaps more than any President.

He seems fairly angry on a regular basis about all Black Lives Matter prostrate, and even suggested that he would ban it had he the authority to do so.

I am not sure why people on the right think this is a ban against “liberal” protests. Quite the opposite as universities are now barred from interfering in protests by progressives.

They also can’t stop tongue in cheek slurs against the the homosexual conservatives (alternative right) like Milo Yumisomethingopolis, Ben Shapiro, and Dave Rubin.

As people have mentioned, any religious based schools, classes, or colleges within universities are going to get creamed with protests.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

If this is done indiscriminately, that's one good thing he's done in a mountain of bs

So universities can't get grant money unless they allow everyone to speak. I'm curious to see if this is applied across the board. Pretty sure private religious universities can get federal grants too. Will they be required to let anyone speak?

Also, what exactly is this meant to solve?

I think Trump bought into the fictional problem of Conservative views being banned from speech at Universities. So he made up a redundant order to fix an imaginary problem.

Like the nature of the pro-homosexual protests, for religious universities, this is gonna blow up in their faces.

There is a real problem though. Even comedians can't joke about stuff. Comedians refuse to go to universities

My philosophy: let everyone speak and the fools will make a fool of themselves. Flat earthers will look like idiots, Race supremacists like white supremacists will show how inferior in thought and intelligence they are and extreme leftist she's will be laughed at like they deserve. Hopefully comedians can get back to their jobs without being annoyed or driven out by extremely sensitive and snowflakey extremes on both sides. The only ones I worry about are antivaxxers. They are dangerous.

Isn't this the same guy who wants to censor the media, outright banning certain ones from events? Probably the most hypocritical, dishonest, and dumbest presidents in the history of this great nation.

I can't wait for this to blow up in his face. Grabbing popcorn.
