Forums - Sony - RUMOR: Sony in discussions to aquire Take-Two Interactive

I don't want to see a repeat of what we are seeing in tv streaming in game streaming. In tv streaming right now, I feel like I need to be subscribed to about 6 different services to watch every show I want to watch (Netflix, Hulu, Disney +, HBO Go, Amazon Prime, CBS All-Access), and now it looks like we're moving toward a future where I am going to need to subscribe to 3 different gaming services as well, possibly more if Amazon and Apple throw their hat in the ring (which is quite possible), plus buy a Nintendo system as well if they don't go the streaming route (which I doubt they will. I'm not the monopoly mascot, Uncle Pennybags, I can't afford all of these streaming services.

For a multiplat gamer like me, gaming companies further walling themselves off is one of the worst possible futures. I want to see a future where most consoles/streaming services have mostly the same games, with just a few 1st party exclusives to differentiate between them. People deciding which console/service they want to play on based on what their friends play on, or which controller they prefer, or which they have the most achievements/trophies for, instead of having to decide based on huge amounts of exclusive content.

That's what happens when an industry is going though transition like the Gaming Industry is going right now.

In the Near Future, there will be multiple BIG gaming platform like Nintendo,Sony,Microsoft,Apple,Amazon & Google but soon they will consolidate and only 2-3 Big companies will survive so you will get what you want.

It will be similar to today where most games are on all platform with Exclusives differentiator for every platform

Nah MS is becoming a third party studio so it won't happen.

yeah but they could still buy other gaming publisher to add to their catalog

I can only imagine the censorship that would be imposed to Read Dead and Grand Theft Auto. Truly immersion-breaking.

What is this censorship angle I keep hearing? Sony puts out a bevy of mature content. What would be censored?

Since Sony's headquarters moved to the US, they started to put censorship on Japanese games. They ask a complete application and presentation of the game in English (which is already a huge pain in the ass for small Japan-only devs), and they already censored several stuff, like cutting off perverted game modes or putting rays of light to hide panties. Games like Senran Kagura are apparently in clear danger, because they have to modify so much that it wouldn't be the same game, and can't really afford it (or want to).

A GTA controlled the same way would lose all his sexual or drug related content. But hey, it's surely easier to bully small Japanese devs than TT.

First I will state that the actual rumor is that Sony WANTS to buy Take Two, not that they are as of yet. It is supposedly what caused spike in TT stock. It is very believable because honestly who wouldn't want them?

No, it's that they are at advanced level talks. Sony wants, T2 is listening, both are negotiating.

That said, the stock spike was what caused the chatter, not the other way around.

The thing is that Sony is pouring money into so many avenues for current and next gen that buying one of the most expensive publishers around makes little sense.  T2 also has a pretty comfortable future so there's no need to sell.

Besides, buying studios like this has not been their MO for like 8 years.

Buying Take-Two makes alot of sense,if they could sell even 50million GTA6 on PS5 out of the 100million GTA5 sales, that could be a huge system seller and guarantee them next gen

GTA is the biggest gaming franchise by far.

Also with new entrants like Apple,Google and Amazon - Sony needs this kind of weapon

Eventually thats exactly what's gonna happen, just look at the Film Industry

Disney bought Marvel,Lucas Studios,Pixar and attempting to buy Fox

Eventually there will be only platforms like Google and Apple like on Mobile - Sony,Nintendo,Microsoft and other Publishers will be like Film Studios and Distributors

To me it makes plenty of sense.  We're going into next gen sooner rather than latter.  Google is rumored to be jumping into the console and streaming biz.  And MS and Nintendo seem to be getting pretty chummy, too, with GamePass/xCloud possibly coming to the Switch.  What better way to continue to stay relevant and deliver a big blow to the competition than taking ownership of some of the largest game series of the last two gens, two of which are guaranteed to continue to stay very strong? They also have a sports dev team that they can merge with their own, to cover any sport they want, in case EA goes to another company.

Would be a big dent in Sony's wallet but with protential to make it back in the long run.
If gamers prefer to see games locked behind PS than this is exciting news. For me, i was never a fan of Take Two but i am sure alot of gamers outside the PS eco system will be shocked and not in a good way

One bad AAA publisher less if true.

But considering the worth of Take Two (and that the stock market reacted to this by increasing it by 5%) makes me think it's too much for Sony. And Microsoft probably won't let that pass so easily.

Confirmed not happening. Lock this one up.

Sony couldnt afford it anyways. Playstation was the only thing keeping them afloat just a few years ago, no way they'd make that big a purchase.
