I know it's anecdotal but my aunty bought an xbox 360 kinect after she saw me and my brother playing dance central. That was her first and only videogame console

Kinect was totally a system seller for Xbox, no doubt about it.

That's called revisionist history, was it as big as Wii? No, but it was huge. |
The revisionist history is calling Kinect a craze. Here are the facts:
Wii Sports Resort required Wii Motion Plus. Sold 33m total.
Kinect Adventures was a pack-in for Kinect. Sold 24m total.
Was Wii Sports Resort a craze in itself? I've certainly never heard anyone say it was. The game was released in 2009. Did it cause the Wii to spike even further for 2-3 years? I believe most consider 2009 to be the year that the Wii craze was ending.
So the question I have for you is, "If Wii Sports Resort sold significantly more than Kinect Adventures, then why didn't they have the same kind of effect on console sales?"
curl-6 bet me that PS5 + X|S sales would reach 56m before year end 2023 and he was right.
My Bet With curl-6

Wow.
Motion Plus-$19.99
Kinect-$149.99

I'm surprised that anyone who has been following video games sales could deny the selling power of Kinect. I hated the thing but no way would 360 reach the status of 40 million plus in USA without it.

24 million Kinects sold in just over 2 years, reports in 2011 stating 2/3 of console sales were the Kinect bundle, it was aimed at a different audience than the existing 13-30 year old male demographic and Microsoft shifted their content and marketing from "hardcore" to "casual". You're the only person I can think of who doesn't agree that Kinect was a massive system seller and the primary driver of 360 sales from holiday 2010-2012. |
Not the only one, the S model was a much bigger factor than Kinect imo. Obviously, both were still factors in the high sales.

There wasnt a price cut with the S model though and Minecract didnt come to 360 until May 2012 so that doesnt explain 2011 sales at all. Kinect craze had died down significantly by 2013/2014 but there is really no denying it was huge for the first 2 years. |
I already went over this with you.
http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8951179
Specifically;
2009 250gb- US$399.99, C$399.99, £249.99, €329.99, A$599.00
S Model 250 gb- US$299.99, C$299.99, £199.99, €249.99,A$449.00, NZ$499.00"
If that's not a pricecut then I guess I don't know economics.

I dont get how anybody can think a prettier sku increased sales more than the thing that set a record for fastest selling consumer electronics device and was aimed at a completely different demographic than was already on the system.
I know we went over it and you're wrong. The prices remained the same, they switched the amount of storage in each sku adding value, that is not a price cut.
Regular model
512mb-$199 (Sept 2008)
120gb-$299 (Aug 2009)
S model
4gb-$199 (June 2010)
250gb-$299 (June 2010)
If the price is the same than it's not a price cut, its adding value.

What's so unbelievable that a sleeker redesign didn't have a huge effect on sales? We saw the PS3 Slim produce considerable growth over a significant period of time: |
Plus, the 360S was not just sleeker, but also much less failure-prone. Remember the Red Ring of Death on the OG 360? That also got solved with the S, hence why many preferred the new model.

I think the majority of the buying public isn't aware of things such as these, just hardcore gamers. The kinect brought in a whole new demo for X360. Sure the new model boosted sales some, but the majority was because of the kinect. You dont sell 32 million of a peripheral without pushing major hardware sales as well.

Considering the RRoD was found in non-gaming news due to it's prevalence, I'm pretty sure the general public was at least partly aware of it.
