Forums - Politics Discussion - Ocasio Cortez mentioned Smash

Well this thread spiraled out of control.

Around the Network

She is the most popular junior Representative ever. She is fire. Haters gonna hate, and I can respect that. She definitely doesn't represent a "reaching across the aisle" aesthetic that would make people from the Republican/Libertarian parties excited. She represents a younger form of Bernie Sanders and Progressives greatly appreciate her spirit and energy. Sometimes abbreviated as AOC and sometimes called "that girl" in disparaging ways, she is in tune with millenial thought and social media awareness and that alone makes her a powerful force to be reckoned with. Not that I think all millenials, by the way, are cut from the same cloth or political persuasion because they definitely aren't. But I have no doubt that the next time Facebook comes into the House of Representatives that someone on the floor will actually know what they do and how they do it. The future of politics in America 9and the rest of the world) is this generation growing up right in front of our eyes and it would be shortsided to dismiss them because you "have no idea who she is."

First time I fail to predict a CaptainExplosion thread.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

That's not how tax brackets work. But I've seen a lot of right wing news outlets deliberately trying to make it seem that way, so I want to ask, where exactly did you hear this?

Tax brackets are already in place in the US. And she wants to add a few more. (USA have had 70 and even 90% tax brackets before, even under Republican presidents.)
It's technically possible that someone rich (qualifying for the 70% tax bracket) would only pay 70 cents extra in taxes.
Because you'll only pay 70% of your income on every dollar earned above a certain threshold.

Let's say the tax bracket looks like this:

$1 - $5 000 000 = 20%
$5 000 001 and above = 70%

If a person earns exactly 5 Million and one dollar, they will pay 20% in tax on all of it, except that one dollar that went beyond 5 million. On that dollar they'll pay 70% in tax, which is 70 cents.
So their total tax would be 1 Million dollars + 70 cents.

If that person earned 5 million and 2 dollars, they would pay 1 million + 1 dollar and 40 cents. And so on.

Still terrible. She suggests 70% tax for every dollar me over 10m. So if you made a billion your essentially getting taxed 70% of your income.

Yeah if someone makes a billion a year they'll end up with only 278 million, how will that person ever make ends meet!

It's their hard earned money. The government should never take that much from someone.

I generally can tell when a thread on the home page is yours or not.

Yikes. Please don't contaminate Smash's good name. Why isn't this thread in politics again?

I'll convince my American friends to vote for her when she gets to run for presidency.

She should never run. She's so stupid and literally made up a story about her childhood to get elected .
