Forums - Sales Discussion - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe passed Super Mario Odyssey

Which game will surpass Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as bestselling Switch title?

Pokemon Let's Go (Combined) 0 0.00%

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 17 39.53%

Animal Crossing 2019 0 0.00%

Pokemon 2019 18 41.86%

Mario Kart 9 6 13.95%

Other game (please write in the comments) 2 4.65%

Total:43

I think Smash will pass it but after a while MK8 will take the crown back. Maybe if Pokemon 2019 is big enough and they dont drop another main one following year...

My prediction is that when its all said and done, MK8DX will be the bestselling Switch game till the end of the systems life.

The only franchise that has a chance to beat it is pokemon. However, subsequent yearly releases cut off the legs of the preceding title way too early for that to be likely.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

All I see is MK8DX keeping the crown during it's lifetime. There's no way any other franchise other than Pokémon or Smash could surpass it longer than a few weeks at best.

It's sad because I absolutely want a Mario Kart 9 on Switch and this "hurr durr duhm tiddly dumb there's nothing more you can do with Mario Kart, 8 is perfect I don't even want another one" is beyond dumb.

But eh, it probably wont happen. And hey, I don't mind if an F-Zero or Star Fox Racing game take up the spotlight as the new racing release from Nintendo.

I just really want a new F-Zero after all these years.

I want a new Diddy Kong Racing the most, but would love a new F-Zero.

Although I mostly agree with the "hurr durr" point, that's not really the reason we're not getting Mario Kart 9 on the Switch. Thread title is the reason.

Oh, I definitely agree. If we don't get a Mario Kart 9, it will be without a doubt due to sales. Honestly I didn't even think my comment could be interpreted as saying that Nintendo won't make a Mario Kart 9 because of said comments. I was just talking about the type of comments I've seen circulate the internet many times. Especially since to me it feels like these kind of comments were made as a response to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's insane sales and hardware selling power. Essentially people looked at the sales and started accepting that there'd most likely not be any Mario Kart 9, and then started making excuses for why that's perfectly fine. I love Mario Kart 8, it's one of the best games on the Switch and probably the best game on the Wii U, but if there's officially no Mario Kart 9 on Switch I won't be pulling out the "it's ok because MK8 is already perfect" card. Because even as good as that game is, there's SO MUCH to build upon! I'll just accept the fact that it's for logistical reasons, instead of trying to cope with it by reassuring myself of Mario Kart 8's quality. There's no excuses to be made, it's business and it's just logical.

Nintendo would be smart to make Mario Kart 9 for Switch, because that's part of giving Switch a long lifecycle. Now that Switch is Nintendo's only console, it's a lot more feasible to see more big titles release. There's no good reason to make no Mario Kart 9 for Switch.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

This is something I've occasionally thought as well. I've been thinking about making a thread about which Switch exclusives will get sequels ... because a lot of franchises that were once per console, yet twice per generation now suddenly have a big ? mark as to whether they'll get a Switch sequel.

I think Splatoon 3 and Mario Kart 9 could very definitely be Switch games.

Mario Kart will continue selling throughout the console's lifespan, no matter the number after the name. I highly doubt a new Mario Kart release, regardless of how good it'd be, would have a prolonged impact on hardware or software sales, because that's just the sales archetype of the series. People don't buy a console because of Mario Kart, they buy Mario Kart because they got the console, and it won't matter if it's called 8, 8 Deluxe, 9, or Your Mom, it'll always sell similarly.

Edit: essentially making a new MK game for the Switch would be a huge waste of effort, time and money for Nintendo because, opening month or so aside, it'd continue to sell exactly as MK8 has. They're better off focusing on making other games that expand the Switch's library and make it a more attractive console, knowing that more people buying Switches means more people buying MK8 anyway.

Everything that released early has a good chance for a sequel, except for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Another 3D Zelda, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Splatoon... three of those are very much expected to get sequels anyway. Pokémon will have several games if we combine regular and Let's Go variation, because Pokémon releases almost every year.
