Forums - Sony Discussion - Instead of the PS Classic Sony Should Have...

Maybe Im speculating here, but Sony doesent own the most notable games on PS1 like Nintendo and Sega generally did. So that means they likely pay higher fees just to get content on their device. I cant help but think thats why the PS1 is missing notable content.

The PS1 reached $49 a long time ago and while those specs were still being produced.

However, Sony could create a device that plays PS1 games, has a disc drive, and even improves the visuals/performance of PS1 games just by relying on emulation. The PS1 mini disappointed people because it brings none of that to table in spite of relying on emulation and the games run worse.

But, they are able to license them for download in the PlayStation Store?  Every choice they made with the PlayStation Classic screams "lazy" every bit as much as it does "cheap".

The price of games on the store is different than what Sony is paying to have them on PS1 Mini.

PS1 games on the PS1 Store range from $6-$10. FFVII, MGS and RE are all $10 games. These are among the most popular selling games. I dont think Tekken 3 is on the PS Store and its for some licensing reasons.

Anywho, its safe to assume the games they paid the most for were FFVII, MGS, RE and Tekken 3. While pretty much every game they put on the PS Mini were cheaper or free to put on the device. That's likely why we have a very mixed bag of games on the device. Sony didnt want to pay much on games because it would eat into profits and it already has less games than similar devices. The only credit we can give is the games on it are newer than competitors.

Hopefully we will start seeing newer TV devices with 5th and even 6th gen content. If we get the N64 mini in 2019 I would buy that on day one.

Sega has already released mini consoles like that where its preloaded with like 80 games and has a cartridge slot, so I'd be nice if Sony did the same.

However I mentioned in a previous post they shouldve just done a PS1 classic with no games installed. You turn it on and itll take you to a mini PS store where you can choose 20 out of 100 PS1 games to download. And once you select the games and download them that's it, cant change it. Cause I see the problem is just the selection, there's just way too many great PS1 games that a lot of us would have a much different selection.

The thing is Sony doesent want people using their old game discs. I think they rather sell games digitally. But even if PS Mini did that, its still a crappy emulator box that runs games worse.

Second, I think Sony would rather send people to the exisiting store versus make something for the PS1 mini. So if the PS1 mini had the guts of the PS TV, that would be perfect because it already has access to the PS Store and a huge selection of PS1 games. It also emulates PS1 just about perfectly.

Lastly, Sony wouldnt allow people to choose the exact games they want because the 1st party content is cheaper or free to give out. They probably make deals to get 3rd party content cheap because some of the PS Mini games seleceted are very odd. For example, Medal of Honor was a major PS1 release and also treated as their Goldeneye. But they went with a crap port of Rainbow 6 instead even though you can buy MoH in the PS Store. That was a financial decision it seems.

Yea ...Sony didnt really think this one through lol.

So last week I rehooked my PS3, downloaded all the PS1 (and PS2 games) they had that I wanted (it didnt cost as much as I had already bought a few when they were on flash sale).  It's now my perfect PS1 classic lol and can play PS1 disc hehe.  It's also a nice bonus that it has netflix and plays ps3 games/online free lol ..oh and best of all the controller is just like the Dualshock 1 but it has the anolog sticks and its wireless :P

Right, I mean its crazy when you think about how Sony already has give us numerous platforms that do a great job playing PS1 content. They've handled this the past with great care. Even the PSP is a great way to play many PS1 games and its legacy tech.

But anyway, I would like to see rectify this disaster in some way. At the very peast they should stop producing it and get started on a better model.

Fully agreed.

I don't see that as "credit" worthy.  The PlayStation is their oldest system.  It's not they had a pre-PlayStation console that they skipped over in order to give people newer games than the competition.  I'd like to see an N64 mini as well, but for right now, Reggie has said it's not happening.

A better option would have been to include an SD slot and allow it to access the PlayStation Store to download PS1 Classics titles. Complete the package with a download voucher for the 20 games and a single wireless PS1 controller.

I hear ya, but what was stopping other companies from putting 5th or 6th gen era games on a device like this? Sony is the only one I've seen doing it. At least in a device at retail. Sega could have did it but they're busy pushing Genesis games on us for like the last decade.

Its kinda cool we have a TV device playing games like FFVII, MGS and Tekken 3. The only caveat is it does a shitty job at it.

You're asking for something completely different though. Again, at that rate it should have just been a PS TV with a PS1 shell.

If it simply worked like it should in regard to performance and maybe had a few neat visual improvements that emulators provide, people would be happy. Forget what the ideal device would be, it fails at the simple job it was designed for.

A PSTV with a PlayStation shell, a Bluetooth PlayStation 1 controller, an SD slot instead of that trashy Vita memory, and a download voucher for 20 PS1 games.

Yeah, it's different. It's different by being better.
