I've missed a few days, so I'll drop them all here:

#46: Pokemon Platinum (up 6 spots from last year)

Pokemon's Gen IV has always been a funny one for me. They never held me as much as the gens before them did, and even after getting the DS games, I went back to my GB/A games instead. However, after having not touched any of them for 8 or so years, I tried to play Platinum on my DS and immediately worked it out - they're so slow. Immediately, I instead started playing on an emulator and loved the game. Gen IV games are fantastic at their core - but the engine they run on is so slow that it prevents them from really shining. Regardless, Platinum is a fantastic game, with a solid story, great pacing and far improved Pokemon variety over DP.

#45: Puyo Puyo Tetris (down 5 spots from last year)

Puyo Puyo Tetris is a fantastic puzzle game - the best on the Switch in fact. It's multiplayer is fantastic and among the best on the system too. I spent around 100 hours with it last year, but haven't touched it this year, which has meant it has fallen down my rankings.

#44: Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia (no change)

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but Gaiden was my favourite of any FE right up until Awakening, and this is a fantastic remake of it. With beautiful music, character design, writing and great gameplay, it's a classic.

#43: Mario Party 5 (no change)

One of the best multiplayer experiences on any system, there are so many play options in MP5 that make it stand out. The vehicle combat mode in particular really drew me in, I spent a ridiculous amount of time customising builds.

#42: The Urbz: Sims in the City (down 2 spots from last year)

The lone game I bought at the DS' launch (Pokemon Dash is not a thing, we do not speak of it). I've played through it more than 50+ times; so much that I to this day have a mental to do list in my head that is modelled on this game's mission progress screen. Yet, I am always brought back by the great story and writing, the fantastic music and the line-up of mini-games. I haven't played it in a few years now (going on 4 or 5) but I remember every single area, character and piece of music.

#41: Super Mario Bros. 3 (down 20 spots from last year)

The biggest drop in my rankings, SMB 3 is fantastic, but I've lost my love for 2D platformers as a whole over the past year, and that has sent it tumbling down the rankings. The 2nd best 2D Mario is by far the best NES entry, and infinitely replayable; one I expect to see near the top of a lot of people's lists.

I'm a bit curious how you played it. Do you still have an original NES lying around, removed the dust, got the cartridge on ... whatever the youth these days uses - Craigslist (=) ... and found a way to connect it to a modern TV? Or more likely you used a NES mini, virtual console on WiiU or 3DS, NES games on Switch or an emulator? Whatever it was, I kinda interested in the way you got the game to play and what your verdict on this way is. If you use a modern variant, how the controls work and stuff like that.

Wii U Virtual Console. Controls work as they should I assume, other than me using X as an alternate B and Y as an alternate Select, the only difference between the Wii U Pro controller and the NES controller should be the shape.

Thanks. The VC has the ability to make free savepoints, doesn't it? Does this help with the difficulty of these oldschool titles?

Well of course it does, you could just bypass certain checkpoints. However, I didn't use them - if I recall correctly, after being stuck for 3 days at the Death stage I did get frustrated enough to create a savepoint near the end (where the last checkpoint would be) so I could respawn there immediately when I got a game over, but coincidentally I managed to beat the stage right after doing so and ended up never using it.

Thanks. I'm a bit curious how all the emulation options these days (NES mini and Virtual Console are also emulation) influence the experience. Is it better with all this stuff ,the same or worse? Probably also dependent on the title. Thanks for your experiences.

OK, I can't stall for time anymore.

Some hints:

#50
The third installment of a series that just lost 2/3 of its name.

#49
This game is set in 2035, even though its from a gothic horror series that takes place mostly in the 18th century or earlier

#48
A 2017 Switch port brought back a unique mechanic from this GCN game.

#47
Add-on content from this game has become synonymous with overpriced DLC.

#46
What do Madonna, David Bowie, Queen, Village People, and Avril Lavigne have in common?

Yay.

48: Mario Kart Double Dash? I don’t have all the game’s Battle Modes in my head but I think Mario Kart 8 brought back one of the modes from Double Dash.

I feel like I also should know half the others.

#42 Pokémon Omega Ruby
guessed by S.Peelman
platform 3DS
release year 2014
developer/publisher Game Freak/Nintendo
genre turn-based RPG
links Wikipedia
last year  #29

Pokemon is a great series of classic turn-based roleplaying combined with collecting everything. These games are fun. I started late into Pokemon, I never played them on Gameboy or even DS. Only with X/Y I started into the world of Pokemon - and I liked it. As I can be strongly into collecting it breaks me trying to get all.

Omega Ruby makes the list, because of the Pokemon games it works best for me. I had the most fun with this remake of all Pokemon games I played. It is that simple. Also the story was fresh for me, as I never played the original. I don't know, the story, the elements like the Pokedex or sneaking up on a Pokemon, this all just works so well. And it also has the modernized engine of X/Y.

d) You can upgrade your weapons with more reach and number, which makes it even more likely to accidentaly kill yourself.
e) Play with up to five players on one PC - it get's quite crowded on the keyboard.
f) White vs. Black.

#39
a) Travel with a train, launch into space, make music, meet ghosts.

Gears of War 3 is correct!

#47 is something different. Its direct sequel is known for getting port after port after port.
