Forums - Gaming - Metacritic adds "Must-Play Game" badge to 90+ games

Is this a good development?

Yes, this is a positive thing for consumers. 11 35.48%

No, this will negatively impact developers. 15 48.39%

Maybe. 5 16.13%

Total:31

This just in: Mass appeal is for the masses. I'm not saying every game that scores a +90% is for the masses. What I am saying is that hyped catch phrases are for the lemmings. DIEDIEDIE!

I go to Gamerankings anyway.

Surprised this has gotten so much traction. It’s a little badge next to high-scoring games. What is the controversy?

Half the thread is about OTBWY bashing the Atelier series because someone dared to have a different opinion, so the size of this thread got inflated.

Bashed? I did not.

I'd say it's about publishers putting even more pressure on developers (remember Obsidian and Fallout New Vegas with 84 Meta and no bonuses, since it didn't hit 85?), reinforcing general perception of your average mainstream gamer that anything beneath 90 is not that good of a game and of course, even more than it is now, shall we say...intensives...from publishers to major publications for stellar scores.

I get what you’re saying, but I’m not sure the addition of an icon will aggravate a Metacritic culture that’s already very well established. I think it’s up to consumers to do their homework and not treat Metacritic as gospel. WE give this badge its power, after all.

I do agree, I don't really care a about it, since I actually fairly rarely agree with Meta scores, but I think MC is still quite very influential with your typical average gamer....and publishers know it.

Prove it.  You have to say "Atelier is the Awsummest of the Centuree!" while spinning in a circle.  10X.  Now!

Metacritic should give everything under 90 an Avoid badge to please the fanboys.

It sucks. Now I rather bash it.

And then he has to invite us to tea and cookies, and we'll be talking about how cute little Punis are.

I do not acknowledge Atelier or any Puni.

I see nothing good coming out of this. It will only create more toxicity among gamers who solely rely on Metacritic to inflate their egos on their sole choice of consoles.

"My console has 23 'must-play badges' while yours has only 15, therefore, my platform is superior than yours."

I thought the simple green, yellow and red were clear indicators of what games to buy or avoid. Everyone knows that any game 90 or higher display high levels of quality and it's worthy of playing. There's no need for a "Fresh" badge a la Rotten Tomatoes.

More 95 is platinum badge.

More 90 is gold .

More 85 is silver.

More 80 is bronze.

This is a better idea than what Metacritic came up with.

You are Japanese, so it should be more like:

More 95 is S-rank.
More 90 is A-rank.
More 85 is B-rank.
More 80 is C-rank.

Below 80 is どくろ
