Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why was Dragon Ball FighterZ ported at a later date?

Why did the Switch edition not release simultaneously?

“When the development for FighterZ first started for PS4/X1/PC platforms, information about the Switch was still quite vague. However, as the Switch was officially introduced to the world, we quickly understood the platform’s potential, and proceeded with development. At that time there were a lot of clashes with the PS4/ X1/ PC developments, so we decided to wait for development on the other platforms to be completed first before focusing on the Switch version.”

Did Xenoverse 2 influnce anything in the decision?

“Yes, it definitely had an impact. However, during an interview at the first announcement for FighterZ, a lot of questions were asked by interviewers and fans about whether we were considering making a Switch version any time soon. This motivated the whole team to give the fans what they wanted.”

It's ok to delay a Nintendo game, specially with the Switch (think of the double dippers).

Not only that, but publishers don't give a rat's ass about where the game will sell the most, provided they get the maximum sales potential. As long as you get to reach those Switch exclusive owners, who cares if they bought the PS4 version due to it releasing early? Of course, said Switch only owners ought to be substantial in volume to actually matter as well.

probably so they could sell more copies

Considering that later ports often lean to LESS sales overall, I doubt that is the case.

I think he's talking about double dippers. The fact that this is a late port will indirectly lead to some more sales for the other versions, and those same people will end up getting a second copy on switch. This tactic worked with games like GTA V on PC (and MHW), although this is on a lesser scale, of course.

So he's talking about the combined sales of the game, not just the switch version.

Another reason I think is to not overshadow that other dragon ball game on switch (whats it called again?), and give it some time to breathe.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I know what he is talking about, but it fails to happen like that more often than it does.  In many cases, the amount of people that just pass on the game altogether far overshadow the double dippers.

Example, I wanted Wolfenstein II for Switch, so passed on the PS4 version.  Now almost a year later, Wolfenstein II is out for Switch but my time is taken up by other games instead.  If they released day and date, they would have my Switch purchase.  Now they have nothing from me.

That tactic can only ever work on games that have MASSIVE sales like GTA5.  And most people I know that got MHW on PC waited to buy it at all for that version.  I doubt double dippers did much for MHW in this case.

Post 70% overlap statistic, publishers have to consider whether the addition of a Switch version at launch would boost sales enough to make that version worthwhile or just cannibalize sales of other platform versions. Late releases allow the publisher to market the title as a more unique experience despite content parity and completely avoid the possibility of taking away market share from PS4/XBO. There are drawbacks as well though. No marketing push and cheaper versions are an issue, but I guess that's when you're hoping for a bit of the Switch magic to help you out.

If the majority of the market your game targets is already likely to have an accessible platform to play it, adding another does little to help you. I'm one of those weirdos that really like playing games on the Switch though.
