Forums - General - Moving to Melbourne...

Hi all,

This is my first post, but have lurked here long enough to know a) the community is dynamic, growing and actively posting, and b) there are several forum members from Australia. So, I'm appealing to you for some honest advice!
I am considering moving to Melbourne - I have a good job lined up with a decent company, but have been hearing some frankly contradicting (and at times awful) stories about Australia and racism.

Granted, I haven't heard anything negative about Melbourne (yet - fingers crossed!), but I've heard plenty about Brisbane and the Gold Coast - anything from being spit on, to having bottles hurled at people's heads.

These are first-hand accounts that I've heard from Asian friends who've visited (or lived in) Brisbane or the Gold Coast; on the flip side of the coin, I have an Asian friend who graduated from a Melbourne university and said he never experienced any real racism (although he was quick to specify that if you are looking for a job, then race may play a factor in the type of job you may get).

My two children look very, very Asian, and my wife is from South America; she has fair-colored skin, with black hair. I look Asian enough (from South America, but my mother is Asian).

Realistically speaking, how much does race play a factor in the daily lives of "non-whites"? Does anyone here have any firsthand experience with racism in Melbourne (either receiving or delivering - I just want to know what to expect)? I'm not worried too much about myself, but I will be damned if my children have to ever experience any hardships due to the fact they are not "blond-haired and blue-eyed".

Please, share your experience with me! Thanks!

I live in Melbourne and work with a lot of Asians. Racism against Asians is pretty much non-existent here, the Asian racism was mainly in Queensland I believe. NSW had a lot of racism (Cronulla riots) but that was less to do with racists and more to do with gangs.

I have seen very little evidence of racism in Melbourne, you get some idiots, but you'll get that anywhere.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

A brazilian surfer was brutally beaten in australia once, just for being brazilian. I hear racism stories about australia often...

It's really f'ed up that racism is a thing you got to consider when moving, but well, c'est la vie...

Beside this, australia must be awesome. I really want to live there someday (i think i can stay out of trouble).

I'm up here in Sydney, and I go too the University of New South Wales, which is one of the countries Unis that has the highest concentration of Asians. As far as I can tell there is almost no serious racism. Plenty of race jokes are made, more often then not by Asians themselves.

I myself have been pondering a move to Melbourne once I'm done with education. Australia is one of the most multicultural Western nations on the face of the earth. Every country has it's issues with racism from time to time, but we have less than most and I rarely hear of issues in Melbourne.

Join us in the "lucky" country.

Yeah right, did you see the way India treated us during their recent tour?  One of the Indian fielders called Andrew Symonds (an Australian of Aboriginal extraction) a "monkey" (very derrogatory race-based term).  When the Australian Cricket team appealed for the Indian fielder to be suspended, cricket-loving India went into a nationalistic (read: racist) rage accusing Australia at large of being racist.

I live in Melbourne also, there is no racism here really, about 70 percent of my mates are Asians and they have never had any problem here with racism, Asians have been here since the 1800's when we had the gold rushes.

Melbourne is a fantastic city, i'm sure you will love it.

I'm not from Melbourne but from Brisbane and it surprises somewhat that you have heard about racist problems in Australia. Surely there are problems on occasion but I've never been aware of any general problem. I'm not Asian so perhaps my perspective is a little different but I lived in an area with a large Asian community and about 20-30% of the kids in my school were Asian but we never had any problems with racism at my school. I know this is just anecdotal evidence but so are the stories you hear from other people. It's been a while since i was at school and it's been a while since i was in Australia and perhaps things are changing.

I have traveled much in the last few years and it's been my experience that people are very quick to see racism elsewhere but slower to recognise the problems at home. Hopefully a few more people can join the thread and give their perspective.
