I'm not from Melbourne but from Brisbane and it surprises somewhat that you have heard about racist problems in Australia. Surely there are problems on occasion but I've never been aware of any general problem. I'm not Asian so perhaps my perspective is a little different but I lived in an area with a large Asian community and about 20-30% of the kids in my school were Asian but we never had any problems with racism at my school. I know this is just anecdotal evidence but so are the stories you hear from other people. It's been a while since i was at school and it's been a while since i was in Australia and perhaps things are changing.

I have traveled much in the last few years and it's been my experience that people are very quick to see racism elsewhere but slower to recognise the problems at home. Hopefully a few more people can join the thread and give their perspective.
