Some good examples in thread, first games that comes to my mind are Uncharted 1 and 3, but like people also said going from RE1 to RE2 and espacily RE3 is massive.

Uncharted 1 to Uncharted 3 got quite the push, and I think a lot of early PS3/360 games struggled to maximise power early on.
Call of Duty 3 (PS3) - 2007

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) - 2011

Assassin's Creed (PS3) - 2007

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flags (PS3) - 2013

SSX to SSX Tricky to SSX3 to SSX On Tour was huuuuuuge

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Yeah that model is literally only used in the omni slash fight at the end. Dont know why they did that honestly. |
I would like to have used that level of model during the normal game =]
This should qualify as the biggest jump in graphics within the same game kkkkk
| Landale_Star said: It irks me that that model of Zidane is not how a PS1 would render him. That's either from a later release, a PS2 playing FFIX with smoothing enabled or an emulator....but that aside, FFVIII is a very similar leap from FFVII so I'd say that was comparatively a larger leap. But as for my own contribution, I have no idea but do we consider "Mickey Mouse" a franchise? Because the leap from Castle Of Illusion to Mickey Mania on the Mega Drive was pretty huge, screenshots don't do justice to the jump, Castle of Illusion looks nice enough but Mickey Mania had large, detailed, amazingly well animated sprites based on actual Disney animation work. Along with all sorts of graphical effects such as pseudo 3D, transparencies, and possibly the only depiction of a dead Mickey Mouse.

That is how my mind remembers Zidane, so I can't really confirm if it was a later render.
About the Mickey I don't think it would qualify because it's a different dev. But we can be forgetful about it and consider for the sake of seeing a big evolution in a short period.

On PS2 series like Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper all had a pretty big jump in graphical quality over each trilogy. |
Yep Fighting games with their limited amount of content show at once can have a impressive jump. My mind refuses to register how ugly Tekken 1 was and just keep the good of Tekken 3 =p

Nah, nah. I'm not gonna get this started here. Beyond being super off-topic, I also don't really care enough about Pokémon at the moment (yes, because of Sun/Moon) to even want to get into this argument.
Graphically, probably, yeah. Quality-wise, I'm not so sure... Let's Go is looking like a pretty fun and straightforward Kanto remake, whereas Gen 8, well, let's just say I'm expecting the worst. |
Sorry to have poked the nest =]

SMB is basically just improved sprites. While Halo 4 is much better lighting, they added realistic motion capture faces, higher poly models, etc. I see greater gains in 3D games over 2D games. However, Phantasy Star saw huge improvements throughout the Sega Genesis's life. |
Well the package of the SMB1 to 3 seem massive. I understand that on raw numbers and techniques Halo 3 to 4 seems higher, but on visual impression I would say SMB looks bigger.

Well, that is the Cloud model from the overworld. Here's his battle model. |
Well I love the Zidane rendering and the aesthetics of FF 9, so I won't go leaps defending it. Will just accept that you don't like how it aged. And I do agree on the movies. It was very impressive for our eyes at the time it was done, but today it is very much silly.

Boy ow boy. On the screen Sonic didn't look this lacking =p, but the 3D tryout on a Genesis is fantastic surprise.

This crossgen seems almost like it could be the version on PS4

Not all models were higher quality in Halo 4 (I.E. Environment stuff weren't always.). And in some aspects Halo 3's lighting was actually superior, albeit more expensive, Halo 4 relied on a ton of baked, cheap details.
In general though... Halo 4 was a significant step up over Halo 3 visually if you account for the *entire* presentation on offer.
In general, the 7th gen probably takes the cake for most of these "graphics evolution" comparisons due to how long that console generation was and how creative developers had to get to one-up their previous efforts on the visual front.

Yeah. Cross gen games always bring out the best in the old consoles (and sometimes the worst in the new consoles). Destiny is another cross gen game that looks phenomenal on the PS3.

It just goes to show that power isn't everything. Developers' engines, tools, effects, etc. will improve over time.
