Forums - Gaming Discussion - Biggest Graphical Evolution in a gen for a franchise

For me the best that I can think from the top of my head is going FF VII to FF IX in 3 years inside the same generation.

    vs

What is the highest jump you can remember?

Dear God, OP's images are exactly why don't really care for graphics improvements from one gen to the next. The FF9 character is hilariously overtextured for the polygon level. It looks awful next to the simplified Cloud. Too often developers simply try too hard to get as realistic as possible, and the end result is this look that does not age well at all. Super Mario World looks miles better than UMK3. Fable 2 looks better than Oblivion. Disgaea looks better than PS2's Socom games.

On topic: Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 had a pretty big difference.

I didn't play much Super Mario at NES to remember fast about these. But yes that is quite the jump.

You are quite vocal... but to say Zidane looks awful next to that ugly Cloud is hilarious for me. But I do smell a big preference for cartoon graphics over photorealism.

That is also massive. Perhaps I didn't remember the jump because I didn't play they one after the other, it was like 4 years appart and I only got back to RE1 playing on PS1 and the remake without replaying RE3.

I think thats the only think I could think of for now that is biggest. I'm mostly into mario the biggest graphical jump from same gen is mostly old console unless we did same gen like pokemon yellow to pokemon stadium handheld vs console?

Well it would be a little cheating =p

Yep I don't think going gen after 5 will have as big jump on same gen.

From what I remember it wasn't very big.

Well in terms of final fantasy 7 and 9 lets not forget 7 used different models for its field and battle models. And Cloud him self used a higher quality model during the final fight with sephiroth.

Halo 3 to Halo 4. The disparity in these games is kinda like a generational leap.

Halo 3 character models were average at best for the time, while Halo 4 were among the best of the gen.
